Chapter 10 - The Knock at the Door That Shattered the Fragile Peace

The warm, celebratory atmosphere of the dining room evaporated instantly, replaced by a heavy, suffocating silence that made the guests shift uncomfortably in their velvet chairs.

Before Adrian could offer reassuring words to ease his daughter’s sudden anxiety, a sharp, authoritative sound echoed through the cavernous foyer of the mansion.

Bang. Bang. Bang.

It wasn't the polite chime of the electronic doorbell, nor was it the gentle knock of a visiting neighbor; it was the aggressive, rhythmic pounding of heavy knuckles against the thick oak front doors.

The entire table froze in absolute stillness, the remaining laughter dying instantly on the lips of the distinguished board members who had been toasting Mia’s victory just moments prior.

Adrian stood up slowly from his chair, his imposing height instantly projecting an aura of lethal readiness as he buttoned his suit jacket with calm, calculated precision.

"Stay here at the table, everyone. Do not open the doors for anyone," Adrian commanded in a low, absolute tone that brook no argument or disobedience from the startled guests.

He walked out of the dining room with long, measured strides, his heavy leather shoes clicking sharply against the polished marble floor of the foyer as he approached the grand entrance.

Bang. Bang. Bang.

The pounding came again, louder and more insistent this time, rattling the heavy brass doorknob and vibrating through the high-domed ceiling of the magnificent entrance hall.

Adrian reached out, gripped the cold brass handle with his right hand, and unlocked the heavy deadbolt with a sharp, mechanical click before throwing both doors wide open.

Standing on the illuminated stone porch was not a police officer, nor a process server delivering divorce papers, but a tall, impeccably dressed man in a charcoal-gray tailored suit.

He looked to be in his early forties, possessing sharp, aristocratic facial features that mirrored Adrian’s own reflection with an uncanny, almost haunting degree of familial similarity.

A cool, predatory smile played across the stranger's lips, his pale blue eyes gleaming with an eerie intelligence under the harsh glow of the exterior carriage lamps.

"Good evening, cousin. It’s been quite a long time since anyone in this house bothered to check the visitor log for the forgotten branch of the family tree," the stranger said smoothly.

Adrian didn't flinch, nor did he drop his guard; instead, his posture grew rigidly defensive, his eyes narrowing into cold slits as he stared at the uninvited visitor standing on his threshold.

"Marcus," Adrian said the name like a curse word tasting bitter and foul on the back of his tongue, recognizing the face he hadn't seen since a stormy night thirty years ago.

"I thought your grandfather’s offshore accounts had finally buried you and your pathetic ambitions in some damp, forgotten corner of Zurich permanently," Adrian spat coldly.

Marcus chuckled softly, stepping uninvited across the threshold of the grand mansion, his expensive leather shoes clicking against the pristine marble floor as he brushed past his frozen cousin.

"Buried? Oh, my dear Adrian, people like us are never truly buried. We simply wait in the shadows until the rightful heirs come home to reclaim what was stolen from them," Marcus replied smoothly.

He strolled leisurely into the foyer, his eyes scanning the luxurious architectural details of the mansion with the practiced air of a man calculating the precise net worth of every single object in sight.

"You let a cheap, desperate social climber like Vanessa almost burn your house down, Adrian. You’re losing your edge, your focus, and quite frankly, your monopoly on this empire."

Adrian turned around slowly, his large frame blocking the hallway leading to the dining room where little Mia and the remaining guests were anxiously listening to the muffled confrontation.

"Get out of my house, Marcus. You have no legal standing here, no jurisdiction, and no right to cross these doors after what your grandfather tried to pull three decades ago."

Marcus stopped walking, turning back to face Adrian with a cold, unyielding smirk playing across his lips as he reached slowly into the inside pocket of his charcoal-gray tailored jacket.

"Legal standing? Oh, Adrian... I am afraid you haven't checked your corporate server logs within the last ten minutes, have you?" Marcus asked, his voice dripping with venomous amusement.

He pulled a sleek, encrypted gold-plated flash drive from his pocket, holding it up delicately between his thumb and index finger so the exterior brass contacts gleamed under the chandelier light.

"Project V is safely downloaded, decrypted, and backed up across three secure servers in international waters. Every single patent, every single trust, every single hidden asset is now fifty percent mine."

Adrian’s face drained of color for a brief fraction of a second, the horrifying realization of the data breach hitting his nervous system like a bolt of high-voltage electricity.

"You hacked my system," Adrian growled, taking a sudden, aggressive step forward as his hands clenched instinctively into tight, white-knuckled fists at his sides.

"I didn't hack anything, cousin. I simply took back what was legally transferred to my grandfather before your side of the family orchestrated his quiet, convenient disappearance in the nineties."

Marcus stepped closer, dropping his voice to a low, venomous whisper that carried a terrifying promise of total, absolute corporate and personal destruction.

"And the best part? Your little musical prodigy up there—the one whose hair just got hacked off by your unhinged wife—she’s going to pay off our family debt with every single cent of her trust fund."

Before Marcus could finish his sentence, a heavy, deafening thud echoed from the dining room doorway behind them, making both men snap their heads around in sudden, universal shock.

Mia stood frozen in the archway of the dining room, her tiny face pale as paper, her dark eyes wide and unblinking as she absorbed every single word of the devastating conversation.

She had slipped quietly away from the table, ignoring Adrian’s strict commands, driven by an instinctive, childish need to protect her father from whatever monster was lurking at the front door.

And now, standing face to face with the shadowy puppet master who had engineered her entire nightmare, Mia realized that Vanessa’s cruel haircut was only the very first drop in an oncoming tsunami.

Marcus turned his head slowly, locking his cold, pale blue eyes onto the trembling little girl standing in the doorway with a sickeningly sweet smile that promised absolute ruin.

"Ah, and here is the little star of the show now," Marcus purred softly, taking a slow step toward the terrified child while extending a welcoming hand.
