Chapter 13 - THE OPERATING ROOM OF KARMA: WHEN A SURGEON HOLDS A LIFE IN HER HANDS

Operating Room Three was deathly quiet, save for the rhythmic, mechanical hiss of the ventilator and the steady, monitored beep of the cardiac monitor.

Claire stood at the center of the sterile table, her hands deep inside the open chest cavity of the man lying unconscious beneath surgical drapes.

She had successfully clamped the severed subclavian artery three minutes after rolling him into the OR, arresting the massive internal hemorrhage that would have killed him within blocks of the hospital.

Now, she was calmly, methodically repairing the vascular damage with fine 5-0 Prolene suture.

Her surgical gown was spotless. Her breathing was even. Her hands—the legendary hands of Northbridge Medical Center’s Director of Cardiothoracic Surgery—didn't tremble by a single millimeter.

The circulating nurse stood quietly near the heart-lung console, watching Claire with a mix of awe and tense anticipation.

“Vascular repair is complete,” Claire announced, her voice flat, level, and entirely devoid of emotion. “Let’s flush the chest cavity and inspect for secondary tissue trauma.”

“Amazing work, Dr. Bennett,” the scrub nurse whispered quietly, handing her a sterile sponge. “Another five minutes in the field and he wouldn't have survived the transport.”

Claire didn't smile. She didn't offer a triumphant remark.

She simply stared down at Cole’s pale, bruised face resting peacefully beneath the anesthetic mask.

He looked small. Pathetic. Stripped of every illusion of grandeur he had ever manufactured.

In this operating room, under these blinding lights, Cole Bennett wasn't an ex-husband, a betrayer, or a villain.

He was simply a patient.

And Dr. Claire Bennett was a surgeon.

She had signed no oaths of vengeance; she had sworn an oath to preserve human life, to heal the sick, and to never let personal malice interfere with the sacred duty of the scalpel.

“Prepare for layered chest closure,” Claire instructed calmly, stepping back from the table and holding out her hands for the scrub nurse to remove her bloody outer gloves. “Transfer him to the cardiovascular ICU the moment he’s stable. Notify me the second he regains consciousness.”
