Chapter 5 - THE CRASHING EMPIRE: HOW BENNETT BIOMEDICAL BEGAN TO BLEED

While Claire stood over an open chest cavity in Operating Room Three at Northbridge Medical Center, expertly repairing a shredded mitral valve with microscopic, rhythmic precision, her former husband was experiencing his own catastrophic medical emergency in the corporate world.

Cole Bennett sat at the head of the polished glass conference table at Bennett Biomedical’s sleek downtown headquarters.

The room was dead silent, save for the hum of the overhead projector displaying quarterly financial reports that looked like a horror movie.

“Sales are down forty-two percent, Mr. Bennett,” his chief financial officer reported, sweat beading on his forehead. “Since the news of your messy divorce and the pending asset-freezing injunctions filed by Mrs. Bennett’s legal team broke across the tech sector, our primary venture capital backers have officially pulled out of the Series B funding round.”

Cole stared at the red numbers flashing on the screen.

“Pull them back in!” Cole shouted, slamming his fist against the glass table. “Remind them that I hold the primary patent on the cardiovascular monitoring software! Without me, their investment is worthless!”

“Sir... Mrs. Bennett is listed as co-inventor and primary legal holder of the core patent algorithms on every single software module,” the CFO replied quietly, sliding a legal document across the table. “Her attorney has already filed an emergency motion to sever her intellectual property from the corporate entity. Bennett Biomedical legally cannot sell, license, or operate using those patents as of this morning.”

Cole grabbed the document, his eyes scanning the legal text in mounting horror.

Claire hadn't just left him.

She had stripped him of the very foundation of his company.

The software he had built his entire arrogant identity upon—the code she had stayed up until 2:00 AM rewriting on a borrowed laptop four years ago—was now legally barred from being used by Bennett Biomedical.

His phone buzzed in his pocket.

Thinking it was his attorneys with good news, Cole snatched it out and glanced at the screen.

It wasn't his lawyers.

It was Sloane.

“Cole, where are you? My landlord is threatening to evict us because the corporate credit card you gave me just got declined at the grocery store. Fix this right now!”

Cole stared at the text message.

He looked at the red numbers on the boardroom projector.

He looked at the empty seat at the head of the conference table where Claire used to sit during board meetings, silently guiding him, covering his blind spots, and protecting him from his own incompetence.

For the first time since the freezing February night he walked out of his kitchen, Cole Bennett realized the horrifying, irreversible magnitude of his actions.

He had traded a brilliant, loyal, multi-millionaire cardiothoracic surgeon wife for a lying mistress carrying a phantom child.
