Chapter 14 - THE WAKING HOUR: WHEN THE PAST MEETS THE SCALPEL’S KERNEL OF TRUTH

Twelve hours later, the private room in the cardiovascular ICU was quiet, bathed in the soft, ambient glow of evening twilight filtering through the hospital windows.

Cole Bennett slowly fluttered his eyelids open.

The harsh, artificial glare of the ICU monitors overhead made him wince, a sharp, throbbing pain radiating across his left shoulder and chest where the surgical incisions had been stitched closed.

He swallowed, his throat feeling like sandpaper.

“Water...” he rasped, his voice a dry, pathetic croak.

A nurse standing quietly near the heart-rate monitor stepped forward, dipping a sponge into a cup of ice water and moistening his cracked lips.

“Easy, Mr. Bennett,” the nurse said gently. “You’ve been through a major vascular trauma. You’re lucky to be alive.”

Cole blinked heavily, his eyes slowly adjusting to the room. He looked down at his chest, feeling the heavy bandages wrapping his torso, before looking up at the nurse.

“Who... who operated on me?” he whispered.

The nurse paused, her expression softening into a quiet, respectful solemnity.

“Dr. Claire Bennett. The Director of Cardiothoracic Surgery herself.”

Cole’s breath hitched in his throat. Tears instantly welled in his bloodshot eyes, spilling over his cheeks and soaking into the hospital pillow.

She had saved him.

After everything he had done—after abandoning her on the kitchen floor, cheating on her with a manipulative liar, destroying her company, and trying to erase her from his world—she had put her hands inside his chest and brought him back from the dead.

The heavy door of the ICU room clicked open.

Cole turned his head slowly on the pillow.

Dr. Claire Bennett walked into the room.

She wasn't wearing her surgical scrubs; she wore her sharp, tailored charcoal pantsuit and her crisp white lab coat, holding a medical clipboard against her chest. She looked radiant, powerful, and completely untouchable.

She stopped at the foot of his bed, looking down at him with those dark, unreadable eyes.

“Dr. Bennett... Claire,” Cole wept, his voice breaking into a ragged, pathetic sob as he raised a shaking hand from the bedsheets. “You... you saved me.”

Claire didn't move closer to the bed. She remained standing firmly near the doorway, holding her clipboard like a shield.

“You were brought into my trauma bay with a severed subclavian artery, Mr. Bennett,” Claire said, her voice completely level, professional, and entirely devoid of warmth. “As a physician, it was my legal and moral obligation to preserve your life.”

“I’m sorry,” Cole sobbed, the words tearing out of his chest with agonizing desperation. “I’m so sorry for everything, Claire. I threw away an angel for a demon. I ruined my life, my company, my soul... I think about our baby girl every single day. Please... can we ever forgive... can we ever go back to—?”

“There is no ‘back,’ Mr. Bennett,” Claire interrupted softly, cutting off his pathetic plea with the precision of a scalpel.

She stepped one pace closer, her gaze pinning him to the mattress.

“You died in your mind the night you walked out of that kitchen,” Claire stated, every word falling like a lead weight. “The man lying in this bed is just a medical chart assigned to my ward. Once you’re discharged in forty-eight hours, you will leave this hospital, and you will never, ever cross my path again.”

Cole stared at her, knowing she meant every single syllable.

There were no second chances. There was no redemption arc.

There was only the cold, unyielding reality of a woman who had survived the worst hell imaginable and built an empire out of the ashes.

Claire turned on her heel, adjusted her lab coat, and walked out of the ICU room, letting the heavy door click shut behind her.

Cole Bennett turned his face toward the window, closed his eyes, and let the crushing weight of his eternal regret swallow him whole.
