Chapter 7 - THE TRAUMA BAY TOWER: WHERE CLARE BENNETT REBUILDS LIVES

While Cole Bennett walked the empty downtown streets of Chicago with the ash of his destroyed life coating his tongue, Dr. Claire Bennett was standing under the blazing surgical lights of Operating Room One at Northbridge Medical Center.

The heart-lung machine hummed with a steady, rhythmic thrumming sound.

“Clamp applied,” Claire announced, her voice calm, clear, and absolute through her surgical mask. “We’re arresting the heart now. Hand me the 6-0 Prolene suture.”

The surgical scrub nurse placed the delicate needle holder directly into Claire’s gloved palm with practiced, flawless efficiency.

For the past four months, Claire had lived inside the hospital wards, pouring every ounce of her grief, her brilliance, and her unyielding dedication into her patients.

She hadn't taken a single day off.

She hadn't answered a single phone call from unknown numbers.

Her divorce from Cole had been finalized the week prior in a twenty-minute closed-door hearing where Marcus Vance—her ruthless divorce attorney—had systematically dismantled Cole’s financial claims, securing one hundred percent of Claire’s pre-marital patents, her personal investment portfolios, and a restraining order that barred Cole from coming within a mile of her or her hospital.

Bennett Biomedical was officially bankrupt, liquidated by the bankruptcy court to pay off creditors and legal fees.

Sloane Avery had vanished from the luxury apartment, evading eviction by fleeing the state with a handful of stolen designer handbags, leaving Cole to face the mounting lawsuits alone.

And Claire?

Claire was healing.

Not by forgetting the baby girl she had lost on that freezing February night—she kept a small, delicate silver angel charm inside her surgical scrub pocket every single day to honor little Emma’s memory—but by saving the lives of others.

“Graft is secure,” Claire announced, inspecting her vascular handiwork with clinical perfection. “Let’s restart the heart. Perfusion, you’re clear to come off bypass.”

The perfusionist adjusted the massive console dials.

The monitors flickered.

Then, a steady, strong green sinus waveform traced across the central screen.

Beep... beep... beep...

“Heart is beating on its own,” the chief resident reported, smiling proudly beneath his mask. “Amazing work, Dr. Bennett. That was textbook.”

“Good job, team,” Claire said, stepping back from the operating table and stripping off her bloody outer gloves. “Let’s close. I have a trauma consult waiting in the ER.”

She walked out of the operating room, shedding her gown and cap, washed her hands at the scrub sink, and stepped out into the bustling, brightly lit hallway of Northbridge Medical Center.

As she strode toward the elevator bank, her pager vibrated against her belt.

She glanced down at the screen.
