Chapter 14 - The Trap at the Hotel Grand and the Master Ledger

The private penthouse suite at the Hotel Grand overlooking the Chicago lakefront was dark, save for the ambient city lights streaming through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows.
Adrien Vale stood by the edge of the suite’s private balcony, his dark coat whipping in the cold wind off Lake Michigan, holding his secure satellite comms device to his ear.
Inside the suite, Arthur Vance and two tactical operatives stood guard over Marcus Vance, while Elena Moretti sat at a small mahogany writing desk, staring intently at a battered, encrypted flash drive Marcus had handed over as a gesture of good faith.
“Arthur,” Adrien’s voice came through the comms as he walked back inside from the balcony, sliding the glass door shut behind him.
“The perimeter scanners just flagged three unmarked black vans pulling into the subterranean garage without transponders. New York plates.”
Arthur Vance immediately drew his sidearm, gesturing sharply to his men to secure the suite’s entry points.
“They tracked Marcus here,” Arthur muttered, his face hardening into an expression of grim resolve.
“They didn't just track him, Arthur,” Elena said, her eyes fixed on the glowing screen of her laptop as the flash drive automatically initiated a background decryption sequence.
“Look at the ping logs on the drive. Marcus’s backup copy wasn't hidden—it was a beacon. He led them straight to us.”
Marcus flinched from his seat in the corner, his hands still cuffed.
“I had no choice!” Marcus protested frantically.
“They were going to torture me until I gave up your location, Vale! I brought them here so you could eliminate them once and for all!”
“You arrogant bastard,” Adrien growled, closing the distance in two strides and grabbing Marcus by the collar of his coat, hauling him out of the chair with effortless strength.
“You turned my fiancée’s debut into a hunting ground?”
“Gideon, wait,” Elena’s voice cut through the tension like a bell.
Her fingers were flying across the laptop keyboard, her eyes wide as lines of decrypted financial data and global shipping manifests scrolled down the screen in a torrent of green text.
“Look at this,” she breathed out, pointing at the monitor.
“It’s not just a ledger. It’s the real-time location tracker of every single asset the Global Logistics Trust controls across North America.”
Adrien dropped Marcus back onto the chair with a heavy thud, turning his attention instantly toward the screen.
“Can you lock them out?” Adrien demanded.
“Give me sixty seconds,” Elena replied, her focus absolute, her fingers moving with the precise, rhythmic velocity of a concert pianist tackling a complex arpeggio.

“I’m rerouting their primary server cluster through our secure nodes in Boston. Once I execute the master wipe, every offshore account, every smuggling route, and every cartel contact linked to the New York directorate will vanish into the digital ether.”
Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the penthouse suite exploded inward in a deafening crash of splintered wood and shattered brass.
