Chapter 7 - The Iron Gates and the Arrival of the Boston Reaction Teams

The second impact against the north security gate was deafening, echoing across the manicured lawns of the Lake Forest estate like a localized mortar shell.

The reinforced steel bars groaned under the strain, bending inward by several inches before the automated hydraulic locks engaged to absorb the kinetic energy.

Inside the gatehouse, Henry Wallace picked up his landline receiver, dialed a single pre-programmed extension, and spoke with calm, unflappable precision.

“They’ve breached the outer bumper, sir. Initiating protocol zero.”

“Acknowledged,” Adrien’s voice replied instantly through the encrypted line.

“Hold the gatehouse for ninety seconds. The Boston teams are clearing the perimeter turnoff now.”

At that exact moment, three unmarked matte-black tactical vans tore off Route 41 with their lights killed, sliding sideways onto the private access road of the estate in a shower of wet gravel and screaming tires.

The doors of the vans flew open before they had even fully stopped, disgorging twelve heavily armed operatives wearing black tactical gear and carrying suppressed submachine guns.

Arthur Vance—Adrien’s chief of tactical security—led the assault team, moving with the fluid, calculated efficiency of a former special forces operator.

“Surround the sedans!” Vance barked into his comms unit, gesturing sharply toward the two black cars idling outside the battered security gate.

“Do not let them back out onto the highway. Take the drivers alive if possible, but neutralize any threat immediately.”

Inside the lead sedan, Marco Rossi realized the trap had snapped shut the moment the tactical vans blocked the estate’s private exit lane.

“Reverse! Reverse!” Rossi screamed at his driver in rapid Italian, slamming his fist against the dashboard.

Too late.

The second tactical van slid neatly into position behind them, blocking their retreat down the narrow access road while Arthur Vance’s men fanned out on both sides, their weapons trained squarely on the windshields.

Inside the Brookline-style study of the main mansion, Adrien watched the feed from the security monitors with the detached calm of a chess grandmaster watching his opponent walk into a checkmate.

“Your friends from Milan appear to be having tactical difficulties, Ms. Moretti,” Adrien observed dryly, setting his shotgun down against the mahogany desk.

Elena stepped closer to the screen, watching as Arthur Vance’s men effortlessly shattered the side windows of the sedans and dragged Marco Rossi out onto the wet asphalt, forcing him to his knees in the pouring rain.

“They won't stop with Rossi,” Elena said, her voice tight with lingering apprehension.

“The European Property Trust is a Hydra. Cut off one head, and three more take its place in Zurich, Frankfurt, and London.”

Adrien walked over to the sideboard, poured himself a fresh glass of bourbon, and took a slow, deliberate sip before turning back to face her.

“Let them try,” Adrien replied, his eyes flashing with a dark, ruthless promise.

“Nobody wages a war on my soil without paying rent in blood.”
