Chapter 5 - The Shadow at the Gates and the Threat to Lake Forest

Before Elena could process the chilling implications of Adrien’s words, a sharp, piercing chime echoed through the intercom system mounted beside the study door.

It wasn't the standard estate alert.

It was the high-priority red alert reserved for perimeter breaches at the main security gates.

Adrien’s expression transformed instantly.

The vulnerability that had flickered in his eyes moments before vanished entirely, replaced by the lethal, calculating focus of a syndicate boss preparing for war.

He strode across the room, pressed a button on the intercom panel, and spoke into the comms.

“Report,” Adrien commanded.

“Sir, we have two unbranded vehicles parked outside the north service gates,” Henry Wallace’s voice crackled through the speaker, sounding unusually tense.

“The occupants refused identification. They’re claiming to represent the European Property Trust out of Milan. They’re demanding access to the staff quarters to serve a legal notice to one of our housekeepers.”

Elena felt the blood drain entirely from her face.

Milan.

European Property Trust.

The exact syndicate board that had murdered her parents and blacklisted her from the music world.

Adrien slowly turned away from the intercom panel, his dark eyes locking onto Elena with absolute, terrifying clarity.

“They didn't come for my hotel negotiations, did they?” Adrien asked quietly.

“They tracked you here.”

Elena shook her head, panic finally seizing her chest in a suffocating grip.

“I didn't tell anyone where I was working! I changed my name, my papers, everything!”

“People like that don't need you to tell them where you are, Elena,” Adrien said, walking over to his desk and opening a concealed wall panel that revealed a heavy tactical shotgun and a specialized biometric safe containing a secure satellite phone.

“They follow the music.”

He pulled out a heavy black tactical vest, slipping it over his white shirt with practiced, military precision.

“What are you going to do?” Elena whispered, stepping back toward the door.

“You’re hiding in my estate, Ms. Moretti,” Adrien replied, his voice like grinding ice as he racked a shell into the chamber of the shotgun.

“That makes you my property. And nobody touches what belongs to Adrien Vale.”

He pressed a master intercom button that broadcast throughout the estate’s secure network.

“Henry. Lock down the perimeter. Activate the inner security grid. And notify the reaction teams in Boston.”

“Sir,” Henry’s voice replied instantly.

“What about the visitors at the north gate?”

Adrien’s mouth stretched into a cold, humorless line.
