Chapter 10 - Walking Side by SideDon Ernesto offered a small, bittersweet smile, his voice gentle as he reached out a calloused hand to touch Julián’s shoulder.

“Muchacho... my boy,” the old man said softly. “Do not carry that burden. I also believed for many, many years that I was just that—a chauffeur. I was content with that. I was proud to just keep his car clean and his path safe.”

He wiped a tear from his eye, looking toward the beautiful wooden casket. “But your father always told me that family is not formed by blood. It isn't defined by a last name, a shared mansion, or a corporate title. True family is formed by the people who never abandon you when the road gets dark, stormy, and full of obstacles. He never forgot that night in the ravine, and I never forgot the promise I made to him when he woke up in that hospital bed.”

Julián couldn't control his emotions any longer. He stepped forward and wrapped his arms around the old chauffeur, weeping openly on his shoulder. It was a tight, desperate embrace of genuine repentance and newfound respect. For the first time in his life, Julián wasn't acting like an arrogant corporate executive; he was acting like a son who had finally understood his father’s true spirit.

After a long moment, Julián pulled back, wiped his tears, and turned to face the entire hall of prominent guests. With a clear, resonant voice, he took Don Ernesto by the arm, gently guiding him away from the entrance. He didn't lead him to the back door, nor did he leave him in the back rows.

Step by step, in front of the silent, deeply moved audience, Julián conducted Don Ernesto all the way to the very front row of the chapel. He placed him in the seat of honor, directly next to the casket, right alongside his mother and siblings. It was the exact spot where Don Alejandro had wanted him to be from the very beginning.

Before the funeral directors came forward to close the heavy wooden lid of the coffin for the final time, Don Ernesto stood up. He walked slowly to the edge of the casket, his steps deliberate and full of dignity. He placed his scarred, trembling hand gently upon the polished wood, feeling the cold surface one last time.

He leaned in close, his voice dropping to a soft, intimate whisper meant only for the spirit of his friend.

“Thank you for always treating me like a brother, Alejandro,” Ernesto whispered, his voice thick with emotion. “We will see each other again, boss... I know we will. But the next time we meet, I won't be arriving at the steering wheel, waiting in the driveway while you attend your meetings. The next time, I will arrive walking right by your side.”

The entire salon broke into a profound, respectful, and silent applause, tears flowing freely among billionaires and servants alike. In that final, beautiful moment, everyone in the room understood the ultimate truth: the real, everlasting legacy of Don Alejandro Montes was not the riches he left behind in bank vaults. It was the pure, unyielding lealtad—the unbreakable loyalty—he had sown, protected, and harvested during a beautiful, shared lifetime.
