Chapter 7 - The Manila Envelope

The notary stopped reading the official will and stepped toward Don Ernesto. With immense respect, she held out her hand, gesturing toward the items he carried.

“Don Ernesto, please,” she said softly. “The time has come to reveal what your friend left in your custody.”

The old chauffeur nodded slowly, his hands trembling as he tore open the thick wax seal of the manila envelope he had protected with his life. The sound of ripping paper seemed incredibly loud in the silent room. He reached inside and pulled out two items: a beautifully preserved letter written entirely by hand in Alejandro’s unmistakable, elegant cursive script, and a small, intricately carved golden key.

The crowd leaned forward, their curiosity reaching a fever pitch. A golden key at a billionaire's funeral usually signaled a hidden vault, a secret fortune, or a massive corporate revelation. Julián stepped closer, his eyes locked onto the key, his mind racing with possibilities. Was there a secret bank account? A hidden Swiss fund?

The notary took the handwritten letter from Ernesto’s hands, ensuring its contents were officially recorded. She cleared her throat once more, reading the final, private instructions of the patriarch.

“'This key,'” Alejandro wrote, “'does not open a vault filled with gold bars or corporate bonds. It opens a private safety deposit box located in the old vault of our very first office building—the place where Ernesto and I built everything from scratch. Inside that box, there are no stocks. There are memories.'”

The letter explained that inside the box rested the original, handwritten journals of Alejandro’s life, the true, unedited history of how the family fortune was made, and a series of historical family photographs that had never been shown to the public. But more importantly, it contained a legally binding, secondary testamental decree that had been filed quietly to avoid corporate interference.
