Chapter 8 - The Honorary Heir

The notary took a deep breath, looking directly at the family members before delivering the most impactful part of the document.
“'Ernesto never worked for me,'” she read, her voice resonant and unyielding. “'He walked by my side during my entire life. He was my equal in every way that truly matters. Therefore, I want him to occupy the exact place he always held in my heart.'”
The woman raised her eyes from the paper, looking squarely at the stunned audience.
“Don Alejandro left explicit, written instructions that, from this exact moment forward, Don Ernesto must be legally and socially considered a permanent, honorary member of the Montes family. Furthermore, he has been granted a lifetime trusteeship over the family foundation, giving him veto power over any major philanthropic and historical decisions the family corporation makes. He cannot be removed from the estate properties, and he is to receive an annual stipend equal to that of a primary heir, paid directly from the family's core trust fund.”

A collective gasp echoed through the room. The old chauffeur, a man whom Julián had tried to throw out into the cold alleyway just minutes prior, was now legally a peer. He held the power to influence the family's public legacy, and he was financially secured as if he were Alejandro’s own son.
Don Ernesto broke down completely, covering his face with his worn chauffeur’s cap as heavy, silent tears streamed through his fingers. He didn't care about the money or the veto power. What broke his heart was the sheer depth of his friend’s love—the fact that Alejandro, even while facing the cold embrace of death, had used his final moments on earth to ensure his old driver would never be humiliated or abandoned by the world.
