Chapter 1 - The Echo of a Stolen Vow

The crisp evening air of the grand metropolitan ballroom was supposed to smell of expensive white orchids, chilled champagne, and the sweet promise of a lifelong romance.
Instead, the opulent space filled instantly with the acrid, choking scent of gunpowder and copper-iron blood.
The first gunshot cracked through the high vaulted ceiling precisely three seconds after Natalie Brooks pronounced her final, unwavering vow.
"I do."
Those two small words had barely escaped her lips before the catastrophic interruption tore the celebration apart.
The second shot followed with merciless speed, slamming into flesh before a single guest could process the shift from ecstasy to terror.
Natalie staggered, her body instinctively leaning toward her new husband, Daniel Vance, seeking the safety of his embrace.
Her heavy silk-and-lace wedding dress, pristine and blindingly white just moments before, began to bloom with a sickening, spreading stain of crimson across her waist.
The pristine white decorative flowers lining the aisle seemed to mock the violence, catching stray reflections of the crystal chandeliers as pandemonium took over.
For one agonizing, frozen second, the hundreds of elite attendees stood paralyzed, their brains refusing to compute the reality of murder at a high-society wedding.
Then, the massive ballroom erupted into a chaotic storm of shrieks, high-pitched screams, and the deafening clatter of overturned mahogany chairs.
Panic surged like a tidal wave through the crowd, mothers grabbing their children, high-heeled shoes flying across the polished parquet floor.
Somewhere near the VIP entrance, a panicked voice bellowed for armed security while others scrambled blindly toward the emergency exits.
Daniel caught Natalie’s collapsing frame just in time, dropping to his knees as her legs gave out beneath her heavy bridal gown.
"Natalie!" his voice cracked, laced with a raw, primal terror that felt entirely authentic, or perhaps rehearsed to perfection.
She forced her eyelids open, fighting the encroaching darkness that threatened to pull her under.
Her vision swam, blurring the brilliant lights into dazzling streaks of gold and white.
Daniel immediately pressed both of his trembling hands hard against the expanding wound, trying frantically to stem the dark flow of blood.
"Stay with me, look at me, do you hear me? Stay awake!"
Through a haze of agonizing pain, Natalie managed to lift her gaze, looking past her frantic husband toward the front row of the reception area.
Hundreds of panic-stricken guests were trampling over one another to escape through the massive double doors.
Yet, Natalie’s attention was completely locked onto a single, immovable figure standing near the main sweetheart table.
Her mother, Evelyn Brooks.
Evelyn stood entirely alone amidst the swirling chaos, perfectly rigid like a statue carved out of ice.
She was not screaming; she wasn't shedding a single tear, nor was she running for safety like the rest of the terrified assembly.
Her cold, piercing eyes were locked directly onto Natalie with an unreadable, terrifying intensity.
There was something chilling in that fixed stare—a flash of absolute recognition that made Natalie’s frozen blood run even colder than the shock of the bullet.
It was the look of a person who not only expected this exact outcome, but knew precisely who had pulled the trigger.
Across the room, the sharp commotion spiked as private security guards finally swarmed a struggling man near the rear service doors, slamming him violently against the wall.
The haunting music had long since died away, replaced by the jagged rhythm of frantic breathing and distant sirens wailing from the street below.
The wedding photographer, paralyzed by shock, dropped his professional camera, the lens shattering against the floor with a hollow crunch.
Daniel kept his hands locked onto her waist, his knuckles turning white as he applied relentless pressure to save her life.
"Who did this? Tell me who was out there!"
Natalie tried to speak, her lungs burning, but only a faint, broken whisper managed to escape her pale, dry lips.
"Don't..."
Daniel leaned down closer, pressing his ear near her mouth, his face twisted in desperate confusion.
"Don't what, honey? What are you trying to say?"
With a sudden surge of adrenaline, Natalie reached up and caught a handful of his tailored tuxedo sleeve.
"Don't..." she breathed again, tears mixing with cold sweat on her forehead.
"Don't tell them."
Daniel stared down at her, his expression twisting into absolute bewilderment amid the ringing in his ears.
"What are you talking about? Who shouldn't I tell?"
Natalie’s fingers loosened their grip on his sleeve, her vision tunneling into absolute blackness.
May you like
"Not yet..." she gasped.
And then, the pain overtook her completely, dragging her down into the cold abyss of unconsciousness as the world faded away to total silence.
