Chapter 7 - The Intruder in the Corridor

The distant commotion in the hospital corridor cut through the heavy tension inside Room 402 like a razor blade.
Detective Hale instinctively dropped his hand onto his service weapon, his eyes snapping toward the frosted glass window of the hospital door.
"Stay inside and lock this door behind me," Hale ordered in a low, authoritative whisper, taking two swift steps toward the exit.
Before the detective could even reach the brass handle, the heavy wooden door burst inward with a violent crash that rattled the metal frame.
A tall figure clad in dark tactical gear stumbled into the room, gasping for breath, clutching a bleeding shoulder where a dark stain was rapidly spreading across black nylon.
It wasn't a random intruder; it was one of the plainclothes private security officers Detective Hale had left stationed outside the VIP wing to guard Natalie's recovery room.
"Officer down... down the hall," the wounded guard choked out, leaning heavily against the wall as his knees buckled beneath him. "He bypassed the stairwell... he's looking for..."
The guard’s voice trailed off as his eyes rolled back, and he collapsed heavily onto the linoleum floor, unconscious from blood loss.
Absolute terror gripped the room.
Daniel reacted instantly, but not in the way a terrified new husband should; instead of diving toward Natalie to shield her, he lunged directly for the bedside table where Detective Hale’s open case file and evidence bags had been resting.
"What are you doing?!" Natalie screamed, pushing herself up despite the agonizing pull of her stitches.
Daniel’s hand hovered over the clear plastic bag containing the heavy vintage signet ring engraved with the initials E.B.
With a sudden, violent sweep, Daniel grabbed the evidence bag off the table, shoving it deep inside the pocket of his tailored tuxedo jacket.
Detective Hale whirled around, drawing his weapon in a fraction of a second, the black barrel pointing squarely at Daniel’s chest.
"Step away from the evidence, Mr. Vance! Hands behind your head right now!" Hale bellowed, his voice echoing off the sterile walls.
Daniel froze, his fingers caught inside his jacket pocket, but instead of panicking, a chilling, deadpan smile spread across his handsome face.
He slowly pulled his empty hand out, raising both palms in mock surrender while keeping his body positioned between the detective and the bed.
"You're making a terrible mistake, Detective," Daniel said smoothly, his voice entirely devoid of fear or confusion. "Someone is loose in this hospital hunting down my wife to finish what they started at the altar. You should be securing the perimeter, not holding me at gunpoint over a stray piece of metal."
Evelyn stared at Daniel with absolute hatred, stepping sideways until she stood protectively beside Natalie’s bed.
"You didn't want the evidence secured, Daniel; you wanted to make sure that ring disappeared forever because it belongs to your father's hitman," Evelyn accused, her voice ringing with razor-sharp clarity.
Daniel didn't even bother to deny it; his cold, calculating eyes locked onto Natalie with an unsettling detachment that made her blood run colder than the gunshot wound in her waist.
"You always were too smart for your own good, Evelyn," Daniel murmured softly, his tone shifting from a loving husband to a calculating predator. "Just like Richard. He thought he could walk away from a forty-million-dollar operation and live out his golden years in suburban bliss."

Natalie felt the room tilt sideways, the floor dropping out from beneath her as the horrifying truth washed over her like a tidal wave.
"You..." Natalie whispered, her voice cracking as the betrayal cut deeper than any blade. "You knew who my father was before we even met. You didn't fall in love with me... you targeted me."
