Chapter 9 - The Locked Ward Escape

The heavy wooden door of Room 402 shuddered under a massive, violent impact from the hallway, followed by the grinding screech of metal hinges giving way.
Someone on the other side was using a heavy crowbar or a tactical ram to break through the locked deadbolt.
"Detective, the door won't hold!" Evelyn cried out, grabbing a heavy metal IV pole and positioning herself defensively in front of Natalie's bed.
Hale backed up swiftly while keeping his service weapon locked squarely on Daniel Vance.
"Vance, cuff yourself to the metal bed rail right now, or I swear to God I will fire," Hale ordered, tossing a pair of heavy steel handcuffs onto the mattress.
Daniel didn't flinch. Instead, he let out a low, mocking laugh and dropped his hands.
"You think a pair of cuffs is going to stop what's coming through that door, Detective?" Daniel sneered, taking a sudden, explosive step backward toward the bathroom connecting to the adjoining suite.
Before Hale could pull the trigger, the bathroom door slammed shut with a heavy click, followed immediately by the sound of a sliding window latch unlocking.
"He's escaping through the service fire escape!" Evelyn yelled, pointing frantically toward the adjoining room.
Hale cursed under his breath, knowing he couldn't leave Natalie unprotected while an armed hitman was actively battering down the main door.
With a deafening crack, the wooden frame of the main entrance splintered completely, and the heavy door swung inward.
Through the settling dust and shattered wood stepped a heavily built man in dark tactical gear, holding a suppressed automatic pistol aimed directly at the center of the room.
Detective Hale reacted with lethal precision, firing two rapid shots that struck the intruder squarely in the tactical vest, sending the man staggering backward into the hallway.

"Natalie, hold on!" Hale shouted over the roaring alarms, rushing out into the corridor to engage any backup threats.
Left alone in the chaotic hospital room, Natalie and her mother locked eyes as the acrid smell of gunpowder filled the air once again.
