Chapter 11 - The Digital Dead Man's Switch

The blue glow of Detective Hale’s encrypted department tablet cast sharp, cold shadows across Natalie’s pale face.

Her fingers trembled as she hovered over the keypad, the throbbing pain from her surgical stitches shooting through her lower abdomen with every shallow breath.

Evelyn stepped closer to the edge of the mattress, resting a warm, grounding hand against her daughter’s shoulder.

"Take your time, sweetheart," Evelyn whispered, her voice laced with the quiet steel of a woman who had lived under siege for nearly a decade.

Natalie shook her head slowly, refusing the comfort of hesitation.

"There is no time left, Mom," Natalie said, her voice tightening with absolute conviction.

"Daniel didn't run away just to hide in a motel room on the state line."

"He ran to liquidate the offshore holding accounts before the sun comes up."

Detective Hale nodded grimly, keeping his gaze alternating between the door and the encrypted terminal.

"She's right," Hale muttered, his thumb resting near the radio receiver on his lapel.

"The moment Vance reaches an airfield or a corporate proxy office, fifty million dollars in dirty paper will vanish into international crypto channels."

Natalie entered the first sequence of alphanumeric characters into the prompt box.

The system required a three-tier authentication protocol that Richard Brooks had designed during the final, paranoid months of his life.

BROK-8821-OMEGA.

The screen flashed yellow, displaying a loading icon that ticked down by fractions of a second.

"Your father knew they were closing the perimeter around him," Evelyn recounted softly, staring into the dark corner of the room.

"He told me that if anything ever happened to him, the truth would be our only surviving shield."

"He didn't want you to carry this burden, Natalie."

"He wanted you to live an innocent, beautiful life far away from the corruption."

Natalie let out a dry, bitter scoff as she entered the second passphrase.

"An innocent life with a man handpicked by his killers to keep me docile?"

"Dad’s silence didn't protect me, Mom."

"It walked me straight down the aisle in a white gown and put a target on my ribs."

A sharp chime echoed from the tablet speaker, breaking the heavy stillness.

The yellow screen snapped to a stark, emerald green.

A prompt appeared in bold, clean lettering: PRIMARY ARCHIVE UNLOCKED. BROADCAST CHANNELS READY.

Detective Hale stepped in, his breath catching as the preliminary folders loaded onto the monitor.

Rows of scanned documents, wire transfers, audio logs, and high-resolution photographs populated the digital ledger.

Every transaction bore the corporate seal of Vance Logistics alongside the signature of Richard Brooks and Daniel’s father, Arthur Vance.

"Look at these dates," Hale whispered, tracing a finger across the screen without touching the glass.

"The maritime shipments date all the way back to the early nineties."

"Containers marked as industrial machine components moving through Pier 42 with zero customs inspections."

Natalie looked up at the detective, her eyes burning with cold resolve.

"Send the entire file package directly to the Department of Justice, the federal prosecutor’s office, and the state attorney general."

"And one more recipient, Detective."

Hale paused, looking down at her. "Who?"

"Every major press desk in the city."

"If Daniel buys his way out of a courtroom with legal maneuvers, I want his face plastered across every breakfast television screen before seven in the morning."

Hale didn't argue; he struck the send command with a heavy thumb.

The progress bar surged forward: TRANSMISSION COMPLETE.

Before anyone could draw a breath of relief, the police radio on Hale’s shoulder crackled violently with static.

"All units, all units, code three alert at the Brooks Family Estate on Ridgecrest Road."

"Structure fire reported in the west wing, multiple armed vehicles spotted leaving the perimeter."

Evelyn gasped, her hand flying to her mouth.

"The safe," Evelyn cried out in sheer panic.

"He went to the house to burn the original paper archives!"
