Chapter 8 - I Thought the Mafia Boss Was Merciless Until I Saw What He Did to the Man Who Betrayed Him

Chloe sat in the kitchen, her hands wrapped around a mug of tea she wasn't drinking.
She could hear muffled shouts from the basement.
Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the ash on Vincent's pants. She had just condemned a man to death.
The reality of the mafia world was crashing down on her, suffocating and dark.
Twenty minutes later, the basement door opened.
Dominic walked out. He wasn't covered in blood. He just looked exhausted.
He walked into the kitchen and poured a glass of water, leaning against the counter across from her.
"Is he dead?" Chloe whispered, almost afraid of the answer.
Dominic looked at her.
"He's my blood, Chloe. In this life, betrayal means a bullet in the head. Everyone knows the rules."
Chloe closed her eyes, a tear escaping.
"But you didn't do it," she said softly.
Dominic paused, the glass halfway to his mouth. "What makes you say that?"
"Because you're not the monster you pretend to be. You stopped the drugs at the port. You bought my debt instead of threatening me. You didn't kill him."
Dominic set the glass down.
"I stripped him of his rank, his money, and his territory. I banished him from Boston. If he ever crosses city lines again, Leo will kill him. But no, I did not pull the trigger."
He walked over to her, pulling a chair out and sitting so they were eye to level.
"You see too much, Chloe Bennett."
"I survived by paying attention," she replied defensively.
"You survived by hiding," Dominic corrected gently. "But you can't hide anymore. The Rossis now know Vincent failed. They know he's gone. Which means they will come for me with everything they have."
"Then we fight back," Chloe said, the words slipping out before she could stop them.
Dominic’s lips curved into a genuine, rare smile.

"We?"
Chloe felt her cheeks burn, but she didn't look away. "I'm already in this. Tell me what we do next."
