Chapter 7 - The Secrets of the Ledger

The sub-basement beneath the Bellini estate was a windowless labyrinth of reinforced concrete and iron doors, built during the Prohibition era to store contraband and secure prisoners.

The air down here was cold, smelling of damp stone, old rust, and absolute isolation.

Arthur Vance sat chained to a heavy iron chair bolted directly into the concrete floor.

His immaculate tweed suit was stained with dust, and a thin line of blood trickled from the corner of his split lip where the guards had subdued him.

Heavy footsteps echoed down the stone corridor.

The iron door swung open, revealing Mason Bellini standing in the harsh glare of a single overhead tungsten bulb.

Mason walked slowly toward the chair, pulling up a steel stool and sitting down directly opposite the captive accountant.

“Comfortable, Arthur?” Mason asked, his voice chillingly polite.

Vance raised his head, a defiant, bitter smile twisting his bruised mouth.

“You think killing me or locking me in a hole solves your problems, Mason?” Vance mocked, his voice retaining that dry rasp.

“Your father built this empire on blood and shadow, but he wasn't smart enough to manage the modern world.”

“The men I report to are not local thugs.”

“They are international syndicates who own half the federal banking commissioners in Washington.”

“If I don't check in with their offshore servers by midnight, the entire financial structure of the Bellini shipping ports will be frozen and seized by federal indictments.”

Mason didn't flinch.

He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, encrypted solid-state drive.

He placed it on the steel table between them.

“You mean this drive?” Mason asked smoothly.

Vance’s eyes widened in sheer disbelief as he stared at the small piece of metal.

“Where... where did you find that?” Vance stammered, his composure completely shattering.

“Your apartment above the East Gate stables has very poor security, Arthur,” Mason replied, leaning forward with a predatory grin.

“While you were upstairs playing the loyal servant, my men downloaded every encrypted file, shell corporation record, and wire transfer receipt you've hidden over the past twenty years.”

“We know about the offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands.”

“We know about the payoffs to the municipal judges.”

“And most importantly, we know which international cartel hired you to eliminate my father so they could take over our shipping lanes.”

Vance slumped backward against the iron chair, the color draining entirely from his face as he realized his leverage had evaporated into thin air.

“You’re too late, Mason,” Vance whispered, his voice trembling with genuine terror.

“They already know you have the drive.”

“They won't stop until every stone of this estate is burned to ash.”

Mason stood up slowly, towering over the broken man in the dim light.

“Let them come, Arthur,” Mason said softly, turning toward the heavy iron door.

“I’ve been waiting twenty years for someone to give me a reason to hunt them down.”
