Chapter 8 - Shadows in the Courtyard

Upstairs in the East Wing, the storm outside raged with undiminished fury, casting dancing shadows across the damask walls of Margaret’s private suite.

Rachel sat by the window, watching the rain beat relentlessly against the reinforced glass pane.

Her mind raced through every word Mason had spoken in the sub-basement.

The danger wasn't isolated inside the estate anymore.

Arthur Vance was just a foot soldier in a much larger, more lethal war involving international cartels and federal conspiracies.

A soft tap at the door interrupted her turbulent thoughts.

The heavy panel opened to reveal Mason, who had finally shed his suit jacket and rolled his sleeves up to his elbows, exposing the dark ink crawling across his forearms.

He walked over to the armchair by the fireplace and sank into it with a heavy sigh, rubbing the back of his neck with one hand.

“Is he talking?” Rachel asked quietly, turning away from the window.

“He’s singing like a caged bird,” Mason replied, looking up to meet her eyes.

“Fear is a very effective motivator once you strip away a man’s illusions of control.”

“Are you safe here?” Rachel asked, her voice laced with genuine concern.

Mason let out a dry, humorless chuckle.

“Nobody is ever entirely safe in my world, Rachel.”

“My father believed that building a wall high enough would keep the violence outside.”

“I learned a long time ago that the only way to survive is to become the storm yourself.”

He paused, his dark eyes softening as they rested on the white bandage wrapped around her wrist.

“I’m sorry you were dragged into this, Rachel,” Mason said, his tone dropping into a rare register of vulnerability.

“You came here looking for a quiet job to help your family, and you ended up stepping right into the middle of a twenty-year blood feud.”

Rachel walked slowly across the carpet and sat down on the edge of the velvet sofa opposite him.

“At first, I hated this house,” Rachel admitted softly, looking down at her hands.

“I hated the silence, the guards, the fear of making a single wrong move.”

“But sitting down there with your mother, and watching how you protect the people under this roof... I realized something.”

“What?” Mason asked, leaning forward slightly.

“You aren't just fighting to protect an empire,” Rachel whispered, meeting his intense gaze.

“You’re fighting to honor a family that was stolen from you.”

May you like

Mason stared at her for a long moment, the hard edges of his face melting away into something fierce and tender.

Before either of them could speak another word, the estate’s security alarms suddenly shrieked through the night air, piercing the howling wind with a deafening red alert.
