Chapter 4 - The Midnight Upload

Deep inside his basement bedroom, surrounded by glowing computer monitors, stacked hard drives, and tangled masses of network cables, Jake sat in front of his primary workstation.
The room hummed with the steady, cooling fans of three custom-built servers running non-stop calculations and data backups.
On the central monitor, the high-definition video file recorded from the back of Classroom 402 was open in an editing suite, displaying the crystal-clear waveform of Mrs. Carter’s voice juxtaposed against Dylan’s trembling silhouette.
Jake wasn't just working with a single video clip; he had spent the last six months compiling an exhaustive digital archive of systemic administrative corruption at Oakridge High.
There were audio recordings of the principal dismissing bullying complaints from working-class parents.
There were leaked grade-change logs proving that wealthy donors' children routinely received passing grades for classes they never attended.
And now, crowning the entire digital dossier, was the definitive, unedited footage of Mrs. Carter systematically abusing and degrading a sixteen-year-old student based on his socioeconomic background.
Jake’s fingers danced across the mechanical keyboard with practiced speed, compiling the evidence into a sleek, encrypted presentation package titled Project Oakridge: The Price of Silence.
He configured the release parameters with meticulous care.
Instead of sending it to the school board—who would simply bury the complaint and protect their own—Jake programmed the archive to automatically distribute via a timed public broadcast to every local news station, the state department of education, and every parent portal registered within the Oakridge school district at exactly 7:55 AM the next morning, exactly five minutes before the first morning bell.
He leaned back in his ergonomic chair, staring at the countdown timer ticking steadily downward on the screen.
Hours: 7. Minutes: 42. Seconds: 15.
His phone buzzed on the desk beside his mouse pad.
It was a text message from an unknown number, though he recognized the encrypted sender signature instantly. It was Dylan.
“Thanks for staying quiet today, man,” the text read, accompanied by a small, tired emoji. “I know it was hard to watch.”
May you like
Jake picked up his phone, his thumb hovering over the screen as he composed a reply that carried a quiet, absolute promise of retribution.
“You won't have to watch it alone much longer, Dylan,” Jake typed back, hitting send before locking his screen. “Tomorrow, everything changes.”
