Chapter 5 - The Calm Before the Digital Storm

The morning air of Oakridge was crisp and heavy with the scent of damp earth and approaching autumn as students and faculty streamed through the wrought-iron front gates of the high school.

Principal Thomas sat behind his mahogany desk in the administrative office, sipping black coffee from an oversized mug and casually reviewing the monthly budget allocations for the upcoming athletic banquet.

He felt exceptionally secure in his position; enrollment numbers were stable, accreditation was renewed for another five years, and the school board was thoroughly insulated from public controversy by a carefully managed PR strategy.

Down the hall, Mrs. Carter strode briskly toward Classroom 402, her navy blue blazer pressed to perfection, her leather briefcase swinging with confident authority.

She felt entirely refreshed after a quiet evening of grading papers and preparing tomorrow’s lecture on polynomial factoring—a lecture she fully intended to use to further break down Dylan’s fragile academic confidence.

At 7:50 AM, the hallways were packed with teenagers laughing, lockers slamming, and last-minute homework assignments being furiously copied before the warning bell.

Dylan walked through the front entrance with his head down, clutching his books against his chest as usual, hoping desperately that today would somehow be less agonizing than yesterday.

He didn't notice Jake leaning against a brick pillar near the main courtyard, watching him pass with a calm, steady gaze.

At 7:54 AM, Jake pulled out his smartphone, unlocked the screen, and glanced at the automated broadcast timer.

Five seconds.

Four.

Three.

Two.

One.

Across the entire county, thousands of smartphones resting on kitchen counters, nightstands, and office desks buzzed simultaneously with an urgent push notification from an unverified public interest server.

Inside the administrative office, Principal Thomas’s phone buzzed sharply against the mahogany desk.

Down the hall, Mrs. Carter’s phone buzzed inside her leather briefcase just as she placed her hand on the doorknob of Classroom 402.

And in the middle of the crowded courtyard, Dylan’s phone vibrated in his pocket, drawing his hand down to pull it out and check the screen.
