Chapter 1 - The Shadow of the Mercer Name and the Bitter Taste of Envy

Vivian Mercer’s fingers tightened around the heavy crystal tumbler,
her manicured nails clicking against the glass with a sharp, rhythmic impatience,
as if the sound alone could pierce the quiet composure Harper Hayes maintained so effortlessly.
The amber liquid inside the glass rippled under the harsh light of the penthouse foyer,
reflecting the cold, calculated ambition that had kept the Mercer family relevant in elite pack circles long after their actual wealth had dwindled into memory.
“She left shaking so violently she couldn’t hold her own teacup for a week,”
Vivian murmured, her voice dripping with a toxic mixture of venom and perverse pride,
as though her sister’s trauma was some sort of exclusive family heirloom she had the right to weaponize against newcomers.
Harper didn’t blink.
She kept her expression entirely neutral,
refusing to give the older woman the satisfaction of seeing her crack under the weight of thinly veiled threats.
“Is that supposed to scare me, Vivian?” Harper asked, her voice quiet,
deceptively soft, cutting through the tense air of the room like a scalpel through silk.
Vivian’s lips parted in genuine shock,
her perfectly sculpted eyebrows shooting up toward her hairline before knitting together in deep, resentful fury.
“You think this is a joke, don’t you?” Vivian sneered, stepping closer,
her expensive perfume—a suffocating blend of jasmine and expensive musk—rolling over Harper in a wave of artificial intimidation.
“You think because your father traded you off like a broken horse to settle a three-million-dollar debt that you’re some kind of martyr walking into a saint’s shrine.”
“No,” Harper replied evenly, adjusting the strap of her modest overnight bag over her shoulder,
her gaze steady and unyielding as she met Vivian’s hostile stare head-on.
“I know exactly what I am.
I’m a ledger entry.
I’m a human collateral payment for a pack leader who cares more about poker chips than his own children.
And you are standing here trying to terrify me because you’re furious that Kane Croft didn’t pick your sister to be his Luna.”
Vivian’s breath hitched.
The accusation hit too close to home,
exposing the bitter desperation that had driven the Mercer family to orchestrate half the malicious rumors circulating about the Alpha King in the first place.
If Kane Croft was perceived as a violent, uncontrollable monster who destroyed every woman sent to his quarters,
then no one would ever question why the great houses failed to secure an alliance with him.
It protected their pride.
It masked their rejections.
“You know nothing about what happens behind those doors,” Vivian hissed, her voice dropping to a low, venomous whisper.
“He isn’t just unstable, Harper.
He’s a predator trapped in a cage of his own unstable instincts.
When his wolf takes over, he doesn’t see a woman.
He sees a threat.
He sees an enemy to be torn apart.”
Harper remained silent for a long moment,
letting the heavy weight of Vivian’s warning settle into the space between them before she offered a slow, deliberate shake of her head.
“If he wanted to tear me apart, Vivian, he wouldn’t have sent Gideon to meet me with an umbrella and a warning,” Harper said softly.
“He wouldn’t have left a panic button by the door for me to press when things got too heavy.
A monster doesn’t give his prey an escape route.”
Before Vivian could formulate a sufficiently scathing retort,
the heavy oak-and-steel double doors at the end of the grand hallway swung open with a slow, ominous creak.
Gideon Locke stood framed in the threshold,
his expression like carved granite, his eyes sweeping over the two women with immediate, total authority.
“Time’s up,” Gideon announced, his voice carrying the deep, resonant timbre characteristic of high-ranking enforcers.
“The Alpha King is waiting.”
Vivian stepped back as if burned,
May you like
her face pale with a mixture of lingering malice and superstitious dread,
while Harper simply nodded, squared her shoulders, and took her first step toward the fire.
