Chapter 10 - The Final Break from the Past

The silence in the grand foyer was so absolute you could hear the distant crash of the waves against the cliff far below.
Richard Hayes stood frozen at the bottom of the stairs, staring at his eldest daughter as if he were seeing a complete stranger for the very first time.
Gone was the quiet, compliant young woman who had spent five years silently covering his mistakes, paying his workers out of her own meager savings, and absorbing his endless complaints without a word of complaint.
In her place stood a woman wrapped in the quiet, undeniable authority of the Alpha Luna of Croft Industries—protected by the most dangerous and powerful Alpha in the northwest.
“Harper,” Richard began, his voice dropping into a pathetic, wheedling tone that made her stomach turn.
“Please. You know how the council is. If you abandon us now, everything your mother and I built—”
“You broke it, Dad,” Harper interrupted, her voice entirely devoid of anger, carrying instead the heavy, definitive finality of a chapter permanently closed.
“For five years, I kept your secrets. I paid your debts. I protected Chloe from your endless stream of disasters. But I am not your collateral anymore. I am not your accountant, and I am not your shield.”
Marcus stepped forward, his face dark with fury.
“You are bound by pack blood, girl! You can’t just—”
“She is bound by nothing except her own choice,” Kane’s voice rumbled like thunder, stepping up beside Harper and placing a heavy, protective hand on her shoulder.
The golden light in his eyes flared with a warning intensity that made Marcus instantly bite back his next words and step back.
“And her choice,” Kane continued, his voice dropping to a low, lethal register, “is to remain right here. If any member of the Cascade council ever steps foot on Croft property again with demands or threats, I won’t just dissolve your trade agreements. I will dismantle your pack governance down to the last brick.”
Thomas Vance, the legal adviser, grabbed Richard by the elbow with desperate urgency.
“Alpha Hayes,” Thomas hissed nervously, tugging on the older man’s coat.
“We need to leave. Now. Before we lose what little dignity we have left.”
Richard looked back and forth between Kane’s terrifying, unwavering gaze and Harper’s cold, indifferent expression, finally realizing that he had completely lost.
With a defeated slump of his shoulders, the disgraced Alpha turned on his heel and walked toward the heavy oak doors, followed closely by a humiliated Marcus and a trembling Thomas.
As the doors slammed shut behind them, sealing off the last remnants of her old life, Harper let out a long, shuddering breath.
The tension that had anchored itself in her shoulders for five years finally dissolved completely.
Kane looked down at her, the fierce, protective aura smoothing out into a warm, gentle smile as he reached out to tuck a lock of hair behind her ear.
“Are you alright?” he asked softly.
Harper looked up into his amber eyes, feeling a profound, steady warmth spreading through her chest.
For the first time in her life, she wasn't carrying anyone else's world.
She was simply standing in the light, right where she belonged.
“Never better,” Harper smiled, leaning slightly against his side.
“Now... about getting my sister Chloe out of that pack before my father tries to trade her next.”
Kane chuckled, a rich, resonant sound that echoed through the empty foyer.

“Gideon is already on his way to fetch her,” Kane said, offering his arm.
“Welcome home, Harper.”
