Chapter 6 - The Awakening Within the Fortress Walls

The morning light filtered through the towering glass panels of the master suite, casting long, golden geometric patterns across the dark concrete floors.

Harper shifted slightly against the solid wall of muscle beneath her, her brow furrowing as her tired mind struggled to reconcile the softness of the cushion with the reality of where she was.

Except it wasn’t a cushion.

It was a chest.

Wide, unyielding, and vibrating with a slow, powerful heartbeat that sounded like a deep drum echoing through the quiet room.

Her eyes snapped open.

She was still wrapped securely in Kane’s arms, lying horizontally across the massive leather sofa where they had collapsed hours earlier.

His chin rested lightly against the top of his head, and his breathing was deep, even, and entirely devoid of the jagged, chaotic edge that had terrorized her upon her arrival.

For a moment, Harper didn’t move.

She simply listened to the steady rhythm of his heart, marveling at the sheer impossibility of the situation.

The woman sent to break the monster had spent the entire night sleeping peacefully against his chest—and the monster, it seemed, had finally found peace as well.

“You’re awake,” Kane’s voice rumbled softly above her, vibrating through his entire upper body.

It was deeper in the morning, raspy with sleep, and completely devoid of the defensive growl he had worn like armor the night before.

Harper carefully tilted her head back, looking up into his face.

The incandescent gold of his eyes had softened into a warm, luminous amber, clear and completely grounded.

“I think,” Harper murmured, her voice scratchy from sleep, “that’s the first uninterrupted eight hours of rest I’ve had since I turned nineteen.”

A slow, incredibly rare smile touched the corners of Kane’s mouth, transforming his rugged, scarred features into something strikingly handsome.

“You’re supposed to be trembling in fear,” Kane teased gently, though his arm tightened instinctively around her waist as if he had no intention of letting her get up just yet.

“Give me ten minutes and I’ll see what I can do,” Harper replied dryly, resting her head back against his chest with a soft sigh.

“Or you could stay right where you are while I have Gideon bring up breakfast.”

Before Harper could answer, a sharp, authoritative knock rapped against the heavy steel double doors of the suite.

Kane’s jaw tightened just a fraction, the protective instinct of the Alpha flaring briefly before smoothing out as he looked down at her.

“Enter,” Kane called out, his voice returning to its resonant, commanding tone.

The heavy door swung open, and Gideon Locke stepped into the room, followed closely by a pair of attendants carrying silver trays laden with coffee, fresh fruit, and warm pastries.

Gideon stopped dead in his tracks, his eyes darting from the sight of the Alpha King lounging comfortably on the sofa with Richard Hayes’s daughter curled against his side to the empty, undisturbed bed across the room.

For three seconds, the stoic enforcer looked completely stunned.

Then, a slow, knowing smirk broke across his scarred face.

“Good morning, Alpha. Good morning, Miss Hayes,” Gideon said smoothly, gesturing for the attendants to place the trays on the low glass table before ushering them quickly back out of the room and pulling the heavy doors shut behind them.

Harper felt a faint flush of heat rise into her cheeks, though she didn’t pull away from Kane’s embrace.

“Gideon looks entirely too smug for someone whose boss was supposed to be unapproachable,” Harper noted quietly.

“Gideon has been waiting five years for someone to punch through my walls,” Kane replied, his gaze following the closed door before returning to her.

“And it seems my new Luna has excellent aim.”

Harper froze, her eyes widening slightly as the weight of his words settled into the space between them.

“Your... what?”

“Don’t look so shocked, Harper,” Kane said, pouring a cup of dark, rich coffee from the silver pot with steady, untrembling hands.

“The contract stated you were a formal candidate for the vacant position beside me.

You completed the night.

In fact, you did what seven other women couldn't: you brought my wolf peace instead of terror.

As far as the ancient laws of our packs are concerned, the debt is settled, and my choice is made.”

Harper stared at him, her mind racing as she tried to balance her sudden, terrifying attraction to the powerful man before her with the massive political earthquake this decision would cause back at Cascade Pack.
