Chapter 9 - Confrontation at the Gates

The main entrance hall of Croft Estate looked less like a corporate foyer and more like a medieval armory, featuring soaring ceilings of black steel and glass flanked by massive pillars of polished concrete.
When the heavy front doors were unlocked, Richard Hayes marched into the foyer at a brisk pace, his face flushed red with anger and panic, closely followed by council member Marcus and a very reluctant Thomas Vance trailing a few steps behind.
“This is an outrage!” Richard boomed, his voice echoing off the concrete walls before he even reached the center of the room.
“I demand to see my daughter immediately! You have no legal right to detain her under false pretenses, Croft!”
A cold, dead silence met his outburst.
At the top of the grand central staircase, standing side by side in perfect unity, were Kane and Harper.
Kane’s massive frame radiated an absolute, terrifying dominance that made Marcus and Thomas instantly take two steps backward, their instincts screaming at them to submit.
But Richard, blinded by sheer desperation and the realization that his financial empire was collapsing around him, marched right to the foot of the stairs, shaking an accusatory finger upward.
“You hear me, Harper?!” Richard shouted, looking up at his eldest daughter with furious entitlement.
“Pack business requires your immediate return! The ledgers are a mess, the vendors are threatening to pull our supplies, and you have no business playing house with a monster who—”
Bang.
The sound wasn’t a gunshot.
It was the terrifying, thunderous impact of Kane’s heavy combat boot hitting the metal stair riser as he descended just three steps, the sheer atmospheric pressure of his Alpha presence slamming down onto the foyer like an physical wall.
Richard choked on his own words, his knees buckling slightly as the air was literally forced from his lungs.
“You talk a great deal about business, Richard,” Kane’s voice cut through the cavernous room like a razor-sharp blade, cold, rhythmic, and dripping with lethal menace.
“Considering you traded your own flesh and blood to settle a three-million-dollar gambling debt you accumulated behind your pack’s back.”
Richard swallowed hard, his face turning pale as he looked up into the glowing amber eyes of the Alpha King.
“That... that was a traditional arrangement,” Richard stammered, his bravado entirely evaporating.
“An arrangement,” Kane continued, taking another slow step down the stairs with Harper walking calmly beside him, her hand resting lightly and naturally on his forearm, “that stipulated one daughter of the Cascade Alpha would spend one night in my presence as a candidate.”
Kane paused at the bottom of the staircase, standing directly over the trembling pack leader.
“She completed the night. She brought peace to my house. And under the ancient laws of our people, she is no longer your ledger entry, Richard. She is my Luna.”
“You can’t do this!” Marcus yelled from the background, finding a shred of desperate courage.
“She belongs to Cascade! Without her, our pack will dissolve within forty-eight hours!”

Harper stepped forward, leaving Kane’s side for a moment to look down her father and the council members with a calm, freezing authority that none of them had ever seen her use before.
“Then maybe,” Harper said, her voice clear, steady, and echoing off the steel walls, “you should have spent less time at the card tables and more time learning how to balance your own checkbooks.”
