Chapter 7 - The Social Execution of Linda Davis

Linda thought she could control the narrative. That Sunday, she went to her affluent suburban church, playing the role of the weeping mother. She stood in the courtyard, surrounded by her wealthy friends, dabbing her eyes with a tissue.

"Elena has lost her mind," Linda was telling the crowd as I walked up the pathway. "The military pressure made her snap. She shaved her own head in a manic episode! Now she’s holding our money hostage. Pray for my poor son."

"Actually, Linda," I said, my voice slicing through the sympathetic murmurs of the crowd.

The entire group turned. I was wearing a sharp, tailored civilian suit. My bald head was striking, elegant, and entirely intentional.

Linda stumbled backward. "Elena! How dare you show your face here!"

"I wouldn't miss it," I said, handing a small stack of papers to the church pastor and the women standing nearest to Linda.

"What is this?" the pastor asked.

"Those are the bank records showing Linda Davis conspiring to embezzle $72,000 from her daughter-in-law to fund her son's illegitimate child," I said clearly.

The women gasped. Linda turned scarlet. "Lies! She forged them!"

"Also included," I continued, unbothered, "is a copy of the police report I filed regarding the aggravated assault where you took clippers to my head while I slept. The photos of the blood on my pillow are on page three."

One of Linda's closest friends dropped the papers like they were on fire. "Linda... is this true? Ryan has another child?"

"And," I raised my voice just enough to command the entire courtyard, "the FBI has just been notified of the fraudulent $3 million life insurance policy you took out in my name. Forging the signature of a federal officer is a felony, Linda."

"You evil bitch!" Linda screamed, lunging at me.

She didn't make it far. I simply stepped aside, letting her trip over her own high heels and fall onto the manicured grass. She looked pathetic. The mask was off. The dignified matriarch was gone, replaced by a desperate, greedy criminal.

"Have a blessed Sunday," I said to the stunned crowd. I walked back to my car, leaving Linda sobbing on the lawn, totally and permanently ostracized from the only society she cared about.
