Chapter 9 - Total Destruction

It happened at 8:00 PM.
Ryan and Linda were sitting in the dark in my house—the electricity had finally been shut off. They were packing bags by flashlight, likely planning to flee to a relative's house out of state.
The heavy, rhythmic pounding on the front door shattered the quiet of the neighborhood.
"FBI! Open the door!"
Before Ryan could even reach the handle, the door was breached. Tactical lights swept through the dark house. Armed agents poured in.
Bodycam footage, which my lawyer later obtained for civil court proceedings, showed the entire pathetic scene.
Ryan dropped to his knees immediately, crying, begging the agents, claiming it was all a misunderstanding. "My wife is crazy! She set me up!" he bawled as they zip-tied his wrists.
Linda fought back. She slapped an FBI agent in the face, screaming about her rights and her social standing. That earned her an additional charge of assaulting a federal officer. She was dragged out of the house in her pajamas, her hair wild, screaming my name like a curse into the night.
They were hauled into separate cruisers while the neighbors—the same neighbors Linda used to look down upon—stood on their lawns, filming the entire spectacle on their cell phones.
By morning, they were sitting in federal holding cells. Bail was denied due to the flight risk and the severity of the fraud charges.

My house was empty. The locks were changed by a contractor I hired. The smell of their betrayal was aired out. I listed the property for sale that very afternoon. I was done with that house, done with that city, and done with them.
Chloe, the mistress, was granted immunity in exchange for her testimony. She moved back to her home state with her son to start over, free from Ryan's web of lies.
