Chapter 10 - The Boston Sanctuary and the Shadows of a New Threat

The limestone estate in Boston’s historic Beacon Hill neighborhood stood like a silent fortress against the autumn chill.
Inside, the house was a sanctuary of warm oak, leather-bound books, and the faint, comforting scent of vanilla and cedarwood.
For weeks after the total liquidation of Ashford Enterprises, life returned to a steady, beautiful rhythm.
Owen was enrolled in a prestigious private academy just blocks away, where he excelled in mathematics and soccer, blissfully unaware of the multi-billion-dollar corporate warfare his mother had waged across international borders to secure his future.
I spent my mornings in my private home office, managing Mercer Capital’s global portfolio, and my afternoons playing Legos on the living room rug with my son.
The nightmare of Chicago felt like a lifetime away.
Until a Tuesday morning in late October.
I was sitting at my mahogany desk reviewing quarterly shipping logistics from our European ports when my private secure line chimed.
Not the business line.
The emergency red line—the one only accessed by Julian Vance and our high-level intelligence operatives.
I picked up the receiver immediately.
“Julian. Report.”
“We have a situation, Claire,” Julian’s voice came through the encrypted speaker, tight and unusually tense.
“What kind of situation?” I asked, my fingers immediately hovering over the keyboard to pull up our security feeds.
“It’s not corporate,” Julian said.
“It’s personal. Someone has been probing our private perimeter defenses here in Boston. Not amateurs. Professional intelligence operatives. We managed to intercept one of their data-gathering drones near the eastern gate twenty minutes ago.”
My blood ran cold.
For five years, we had operated with absolute anonymity. Mercer Capital was an impenetrable ghost corporation.
“Did they get anything?” I demanded, standing up from my desk.
“Nothing vital,” Julian replied.
“Our servers are entirely encrypted behind military-grade firewalls. But the hardware on the drone… it had a specific digital signature. A signature belonging to a private security firm based out of Zurich.”
Zurich.
The word hit my ears like a physical blow.
My mind raced back across the years.
When Marcus Vance had smuggled me out of Chicago five years ago, he had used a private network based in Switzerland.
When I built Mercer Capital, I had utilized Swiss banking channels and European logistics firms to shield my early capital.
Had someone traced the Swiss connection?
Or worse… had Marcus Vance himself decided that my empire had grown too large, too powerful, to leave unchecked?
“Where is Marcus now?” I asked, my voice dropping into a cold, calculating register.
“That’s the other problem, Claire,” Julian hesitated.
“Marcus Vance hasn't been seen in his Geneva compound in over two weeks. According to our underworld contacts, he went into hiding following a brutal internal power struggle within the North Side syndicate.”
My hands gripped the edge of the desk.
If Marcus was missing, and someone was hunting for the architect of Mercer Capital in Boston, that meant only one thing.

The underworld had figured out who was behind the destruction of the Ashford empire.
And they were coming to collect.
