Chapter 5 - The First Collision: Standing Face-to-Face After Five Long Years

Graham didn't care about the gala, the dignitaries, or the reporters watching his every move.

He carved a straight path through the sea of tuxedoes and silk gowns, his dark eyes locked onto mine like a heat-seeking missile.

By the time he reached the shadowy alcove behind the floral arrangement, his chest was heaving, his jaw clenched so tightly a muscle ticked violently in his cheek.

“Claire,” he rasped, his voice dropping into a harsh, strangled whisper.

“What is this?”

I lowered my champagne flute, setting it down on a passing waiter’s tray without breaking eye contact.

“Good evening, Mr. Ashford,” I replied, my voice cool, level, and utterly devoid of the trembling compliance he remembered from five years ago.

“It’s Ms. Mercer, actually. Though I suppose formalities are unnecessary between old business partners.”

Graham grabbed my wrist—not with the gentle touch of a husband, but with the rough, possessive grip of a mafia boss accustomed to taking what he wanted.

His fingers clamped down hard against my skin.

“You were supposed to be out of the country,” he hissed, stepping so close I could smell the expensive scotch and cologne on his skin.

“You were supposed to take the money, disappear, and never cross my path again. How the hell do you own sixty percent of my shipping company?”

I didn't pull my wrist away.

I simply looked down at his hand gripping my skin, and then raised my eyes back to his face.

“You left me bleeding on a hospital bed, Graham,” I said, my voice dropping an octave into a chilling, lethal register.

“You told me to take your newborn son and vanish. You traded our family for a ghost from your past. Did you really think a few hundred thousand dollars and a one-way ticket to Europe was going to buy your absolution?”

Graham’s eyes flashed with a dangerous, volatile rage.

“I gave you a life! I gave you financial security!”

“You gave me a cage,” I corrected sharply, leaning in close enough that only he could hear.

“And while you were busy entertaining Vanessa Cole and playing king of the Chicago underworld, I learned how to build empires. Mercer Capital didn't just buy your shipping company tonight, Graham. We bought your warehouses, your real estate holdings, and your primary import licenses.”

Graham’s breath hitched.

“You’re bluffing,” he snarled, though a cold sweat was beginning to form along his hairline.

“Am I?” I smiled, tilting my head.

“Ask your chief financial officer how many margin calls are hitting your accounts as we speak. Ask him who holds the debt on your private residence.”

Before Graham could formulate a response, Vanessa Cole appeared at his elbow, her emerald silk dress rustling as she slipped her hand possessively into the crook of his arm.

“Graham, darling, everyone is staring,” Vanessa trilled, flashing a glittering smile before her eyes landed on me.

Her smile faltered instantly.

She blinked, squinting through the dim lighting at my face, trying to place where she had seen me before.

“Who is this?” Vanessa asked, her tone sharpening with immediate feminine suspicion.

“Nobody, Vanessa,” Graham snapped, yanking his arm away from her grip as if she had burned him, his eyes still locked onto mine with a terrifying mix of shock and newly awakened realization.

“Just a very hostile business partner.”

May you like

“Oh, more than a business partner, Graham,” I said, letting a cold, razor-sharp laugh escape my lips.

“We’re going to be spending a lot of time together from now on. After all… a hostile takeover is such an intimate process.”
