Chapter 4 - The Trap is Cast: The Multi-Million-Dollar Takeover Announcement

The annual Chicago Business and Logistics Gala was the most exclusive night of the year for the city’s corporate elite and underworld syndicates alike.
Held inside the grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel along Lake Michigan, the room glittered with crystal chandeliers, champagne towers, and millions of dollars in designer gowns and tailored tuxedos.
I stood near the back of the ballroom, half-hidden behind a towering floral arrangement, wearing an emerald-green velvet evening gown that hugged my silhouette with lethal elegance, a diamond choker sparkling coldly around my throat.
My hair was swept up into an intricate chignon, and a half-mask of black lace rested across my eyes—a deliberate touch for the charity masquerade theme that allowed me to observe the room without immediate recognition.
Across the ballroom, standing near the VIP bar, was Graham Ashford.
He was deep in conversation with a city councilman when his chief financial officer hurried up to him, whispering urgently in his ear.
I watched as Graham’s expression shifted from casual arrogance to sharp, dangerous tension.
He pulled away from the councilman, striding purposefully toward the grand stage at the front of the ballroom where the keynote speaker was about to be introduced.
The event organizer tapped the microphone, drawing the room’s attention.
“Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed guests,” the organizer announced smoothly.
“Before we begin our keynote address tonight, we have a major corporate acquisition announcement regarding one of our city’s foundational pillars—Ashford Shipping & Logistics.”
The room murmured with polite interest.
Graham crossed his arms, his eyes narrowing as he stared up at the stage, clearly unaware of what was about to transpire.
“Tonight,” the organizer continued, smiling brightly.
“Controlling interest—amounting to sixty-one percent of all voting shares—has been officially acquired by our keynote sponsor and primary equity partner: Mercer Capital, represented here tonight by its founder and managing director, Ms. Claire Mercer.”
The ballroom erupted into shocked silence.
Every head in the room snapped toward the VIP section, whispering frantically.
“Mercer Capital? Who the hell is Mercer Capital?” someone murmured nearby.
On the stage, the projection screen behind the podium flickered to life, displaying a sleek corporate logo alongside my name and title.
And then, the organizers projected my official corporate portrait—a high-resolution studio photograph of me in a sharp charcoal suit, looking directly into the camera with cold, absolute authority.
Graham Ashford froze in the center of the room.
His eyes locked onto the projection screen, widening in sheer, utter disbelief as he stared at my face.
The color drained from his skin.
He knew that face.
Even with the five years, the high fashion, and the international prestige, Graham Ashford instantly recognized the woman he had ordered to disappear into the rain.
Slowly, agonizingly, Graham turned his head away from the screen and scanned the crowded ballroom.
His gaze swept past the tables, past the dignitaries, until it landed directly on me standing near the floral arrangement.
Through the black lace mask across my eyes, our gazes locked across the crowded room.
I didn't flinch.
I didn't look away.
Instead, I raised my champagne flute toward him in a slow, mocking toast, letting a chilling smile curve my lips.

Graham’s breath caught.
He started walking toward me, parting the crowd with frantic, aggressive strides, a look of murderous fury and sheer shock written all over his face.
