Chapter 3 - The Chessboard Expands: Returning to the Shadows of Chicago

Five years.
Five long, agonizingly calculated years had passed since the night I bled onto the sheets of a Chicago hospital while Vanessa Cole laughed in the background of a phone call.
My son, Owen, was now a bright, sharp-eyed five-year-old with dark hair and his father’s striking, intense jawline—though fortunately, he inherited my calm, analytical temperament rather than Graham’s volatile temper.
We were back in the United States, but we weren't in Chicago yet.
We were stationed in a sprawling, ultra-secure limestone estate in Boston, operating out of Mercer Capital’s North American headquarters.
I stood on the glass balcony of my office on the thirty-fifth floor, looking down at the bustling harbor, holding a encrypted tablet displaying a complex web of corporate ownership charts.
The screen flashed red, indicating a successful transaction.
“It’s done, boss,” my chief of security, a former MI6 operative named Julian Vance (no relation to Marcus, though equally lethal), announced as he stepped into my office.
“The remaining high-yield bonds of Ashford Shipping & Logistics have officially been transferred to our portfolio. Graham Ashford’s primary liquidity pipeline is now entirely under our control.”
I turned away from the glass, my tailored charcoal blazer sweeping sharply against my skirt, my expression cold and impassive.
“How much does he know?” I asked, my voice calm.
“Nothing yet,” Julian replied, a thin smile touching his lips.
“Ashford’s chief financial officer thinks we’re just another anonymous institutional buyer from London looking to expand our maritime portfolio. They have no idea Mercer Capital is your creation, let alone that you hold the controlling voting shares of their parent company.”
“Good,” I said, walking over to my mahogany desk and picking up a photograph framed in silver.
It was a picture of Owen building a Lego castle on the living room rug, laughing up at me with absolute joy.
“Keep the pressure light for another month. Let him think he’s just experiencing normal market volatility. I don't want him panicked; I want him desperate.”
Julian hesitated, looking at me with a mixture of professional respect and underlying caution.
“If I may ask, Claire… what is the endgame here? We have enough capital to crush his entire syndicate tomorrow through SEC regulatory filings and federal asset seizures. Why play cat-and-mouse?”
I set the photograph down, my eyes locking onto Julian’s with a dark, unyielding fire.
“Because federal asset seizures are too clean, Julian,” I whispered.
“A prison cell or a quick bankruptcy is too merciful for a man who abandoned his newborn son and told his bleeding wife to disappear. I want Graham Ashford to experience what I experienced. I want him to watch every brick of his empire crumble, one by one, until he has nothing left.”
Julian nodded slowly, adjusting his suit jacket.
“Understood. I’ll instruct our acquisitions team to tighten the noose on his European shipping lanes next week.”
“Do it,” I commanded.
As Julian left the office, my secure mobile phone on the desk suddenly buzzed.
It was an alert from an automated surveillance feed we had planted in downtown Chicago three months ago.
A facial recognition match.
Graham Ashford had just walked into an exclusive private club on the Magnificent Mile.
I picked up the tablet, zooming in on the live video feed.
Graham hadn't changed much physically. He was still tall, intimidating, and impeccably dressed in a dark bespoke suit, his dark hair threaded with just a hint of distinguished silver at the temples.
Standing right beside him, draped in emerald silk and diamonds, was Vanessa Cole.
They looked like the untouchable king and queen of Chicago’s underworld aristocracy.
I stared at the screen, letting a slow, razor-sharp smile touch my lips.
May you like
“Enjoy your throne while you still can, Graham,” I murmured to the empty room.
“Because the bill is finally coming due.”
