Chapter 6 - The Autumn Gala

Society does not easily forgive those who disrupt its order. The Autumn Gala was the biggest philanthropic event of the year, a gathering of old money and new power. Victoria and Celeste attended, draped in diamonds, whispering to every influential guest about the "delusional maid." Elena arrived late, accompanied by Julian Vance. She wore a simple, breathtakingly elegant gown of midnight blue. No diamonds. Only a silver necklace with a single sapphire—her mother's. The whispers in the ballroom stopped when she walked in. Celeste, armed with a glass of red wine, intentionally stepped into Elena’s path. She "stumbled," thrusting the wine glass forward to ruin the gown and humiliate Elena in front of the cameras. But twelve years of balancing heavy trays on polished marble floors had given Elena perfect reflexes. She stepped aside gracefully, catching Celeste's wrist with one hand and taking the wine glass with the other. Not a single drop spilled. “You serve the wine, Celeste,” Elena said softly, perfectly echoing the insult from the engagement dinner. “You don’t spill it.” A few nearby guests gasped. Julian chuckled under his breath. Humiliated and red-faced, Celeste pulled her hand away and stormed off. Later that evening, on the terrace overlooking the city, Julian handed Elena a glass of champagne. “You handled that like a queen,” he said, standing close enough that she could smell his expensive cologne. “I handled it like a maid,” Elena corrected him. “A maid knows how to clean up a mess.” Julian looked at her, his usual arrogance replaced by genuine admiration. He reached out, gently touching the silver necklace at her throat. “We found the proof, Elena,” he whispered. “The offshore account matches the exact amount wired to the mechanic who serviced your father's car before the crash.” Elena’s breath hitched. It wasn't an accident. It was murder.
