Chapter 7 - THE RACE TO PIER FOUR

The icy coastal wind whipped across the open expanse of Pier Four as Special Agent Vance’s cruiser fishtailed to a halt directly in front of the towering gray hull of the guided-missile destroyer USS Monterey.
Red and blue emergency strobes bounced off the sleek steel plates of the warship while heavy diesel engines thrummed deep within the vessel’s belly, preparing to cast off lines for an unscheduled midnight departure.
“Look at the main brow!” Olivia shouted, pointing toward the heavy aluminum gangway leading up to the ship’s quarterdeck.
At the base of the gangway stood Captain Thomas Sterling, dressed in his pristine dress whites adorned with ribbons and gold command insignia, arguing aggressively with the armed military police sentry guarding the entrance.
“I am executing a priority fleet inspection ordered by the Joint Chiefs, Sailor! Step aside and let me up that brow immediately!” Sterling demanded, his voice carrying over the steady roar of the ship’s generators.
“Sorry, Captain, but my orders come directly from Regional Command—nobody boards this vessel until further notice,” the young Master-at-Arms replied firmly, keeping his rifle raised across the threshold.
Vance slammed his cruiser door open and vaulted out, his hand resting on his sidearm as he marched down the concrete pier toward the confrontation.
“Captain Sterling!” Vance’s voice cut through the wind like a razor blade. “Step away from the gangway and put your hands behind your back. You are under arrest by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service.”
Sterling spun around, his face flushing a furious crimson as he glared at Vance and the battered female lieutenant walking swiftly beside him.
“Are you completely out of your mind, Agent?” Sterling sneered, adjusting his cuffs with an air of absolute arrogance. “I am a senior fleet captain with twenty-five unblemished years of service. You have no authority to address me like this.”
“The authority comes directly from Admiral Henderson, and it’s backed by every single file, financial ledger, and audio recording recovered from your corporate slush fund,” Olivia stated, stepping right up to the base of the gangway until she was standing inches away from the corrupt officer.
Sterling’s eyes flicked over her bruised uniform jacket and the visible scars of the assault, but instead of showing remorse, a cold, mocking smile crept across his lips.
“You think a few stolen audio clips and some disgruntled testimony are going to strip me of my command?” Sterling laughed softly, shaking his head. “By sunrise, those files will be scrubbed from every federal server on this base, and you’ll be facing a court-martial for insubordination and falsifying evidence against a superior officer.”
“Try scrubbing this,” a voice boomed from behind them as Special Agent Vance tapped his tactical radio link.
Down the pier, three secondary security transport vehicles rolled up with sirens wailing, disgorging a digital forensics team carrying portable servers connected directly to the regional command mainframe.
“We just uploaded your entire offshore ledger and the encrypted communication logs to the Pentagon’s central oversight database, Captain,” Vance announced coldly. “It’s already backed up across twelve separate federal nodes outside this district. There’s nothing left to scrub.”
Sterling’s arrogant facade finally shattered completely, the color draining entirely from his face as he realized his empire of corruption had just been broadcast directly to the highest levels of the Department of Defense.
“You… you ruined everything,” Sterling whispered, taking a desperate step backward toward the ship’s gangway.
“It’s over, Captain,” Olivia said quietly, her voice carrying the absolute finality of justice served.
Before Sterling could make a pathetic dash up the aluminum stairs, two military police officers lunged forward, grabbing his arms and forcing him down onto the cold concrete pier as heavy steel cuffs snapped around his wrists.

As Sterling was hauled away toward the waiting transport van, the massive diesel engines of the USS Monterey wound down, the unapproved departure officially canceled by direct command authority.
Olivia stood at the edge of the pier, watching the waves crash against the concrete pilings, feeling the heavy burden that had weighed on her chest for months finally lift away into the salty night air.
