Chapter 2 - The Echoes of the File

The corporate offices of Vale Holdings were dead silent at two in the morning, save for the rhythmic, aggressive clicking of Ethan’s keyboard. The waterproof flash drive sat plugged into his mainframe, its contents illuminating his face with a cold, blue glow.
He had expected to find simple records of unpaid hours or perhaps a few cruel text messages from Vanessa. Instead, what crawled across his screen was a meticulous, devastatingly brilliant forensic audit of his own lifestyle accounts, estate management funds, and charity foundations.
Elena Ramirez hadn’t just been cleaning his floors; she had been mapping a massive, multi-million-dollar embezzlement scheme operating right under his nose.
Ethan leaned back, his chest tight. The spreadsheets were flawless. Every double-entry, every shell company registered in the Cayman Islands, and every forged signature bore the unmistakable mark of his estate director, Cole Mercer. But the beneficiary wasn’t just Cole. The offshore accounts were tied directly to Vanessa Cross’s personal bridal trust.
Vanessa wasn’t just a cruel, entitled socialite he had foolishly agreed to marry for the sake of a high-society merger; she was actively bleeding his empire dry, using his own estate staff as scapegoats to cover her tracks.
A soft knock interrupted the silence. Ethan’s security chief, Marcus, stepped into the room, holding a thick folder.
"Sir, you were right to have me look into Elena’s background before she arrived here," Marcus said, his voice grave. "We trusted Cole’s vetting process, which was our first mistake. Cole told you she was an uneducated, undocumented worker desperate for cash. He lied."
"What’s her real story, Marcus?" Ethan demanded, his voice dangerously low.
"Elena Ramirez was the chief senior auditor for the treasury department of Monterrey before she fled to the States five years ago," Marcus revealed, placing the folder on the desk. "Her husband was a federal prosecutor who took down a major financial cartel. He was assassinated. She went into hiding to protect Leo, changing her name and taking the lowest-profile job she could find—domestic cleaning. She thought she was safe in your house. She didn't realize she was walking into another nest of thieves."
Ethan opened the folder. Photos of a younger, smiling Elena in a tailored business suit stared back at him. She had degrees from top universities, a brilliant mind, and a shattered past. And he had allowed Vanessa to treat her like garbage. He had allowed his own household to become her second prison.
"Where is Vanessa right now?" Ethan asked, not looking up from the file.
"At the penthouse, sir. She has called Cole Mercer three times in the last hour. They know you have the drive. Cole is currently trying to access the estate's backup servers to wipe the digital footprint."

Ethan closed the folder with a sharp snap. "Let him try. Marcus, block his access but leave a mirror trail. Let them think they are succeeding. I don't just want them fired. I want them ruined. And get the best medical team in the state to Elena's room. She stays in the private wing under my personal protection."
As Marcus nodded and withdrew, Ethan stared out the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city lights. He had built an empire on numbers, logic, and absolute control, yet he had failed to see the agony of the people living under his own roof. The guilt was an physical weight in his throat. He looked down at his phone, dialing the hospital's private line. It was time to pay his real debts.
