Chapter 6 - Into the Lion's Den

The docks were shrouded in a thick, freezing fog as the midnight deadline approached. The old Cross shipping warehouse looked abandoned, its corrugated iron walls rusting and covered in graffiti. Inside, however, deep beneath the floorboards, a state-of-the-art server farm hummed with malicious intent.
Cole Mercer stood over a portable terminal, his expensive suit rumpled, sweat pouring down his face as he watched the progress bar of the asset liquidation reach 84%.
"Come on, come on," he muttered, his fingers tapping anxiously on the desk.
The heavy iron door of the basement creaked open. Cole spun around, drawing a compact pistol from his jacket, his eyes wild with paranoia.
Elena walked in slowly, her hands raised, looking small and defenseless against the backdrop of the massive machinery.
"Cole," she said calmly, her voice echoing in the concrete chamber. "It's over. The feds have already seized Vanessa’s accounts. You're running for a payday that will never come."
Cole laughed hysterically, lowering the gun slightly but keeping it pointed at her chest. "Elena! The miracle maid! How touching. Did Ethan send you here to die for him? You think I care about Vanessa? She was just my ticket into the Vale vault. Once this bar hits 100%, I vanish with four hundred million dollars. And you... you’ll be the one found next to the empty servers. A tragic accident."
"You always did underestimate the staff, Cole," Elena said, stepping closer despite the gun. "You thought I didn't notice when you altered the inventory logs for the estate's art collection. You thought I didn't see the duplicate key you made for Ethan’s private study."
"Shut up!" Cole snarled, stepping toward her. "You're a cleaner! You're nothing! You think a few smart words will save you?"
"No," Elena said, her eyes shifting to the terminal behind him. "But the wireless transmitter in my pocket just did."
Cole froze. He spun around to look at his laptop. The progress bar had stopped at 89%. A massive red skull icon flashed on the screen, followed by a sequence of deleting system files.
"What did you do?!" he screamed, lunging toward the computer.
"She didn't do it alone," Ethan’s voice boomed from the shadows near the entrance. He stepped into the light, followed by Marcus and four federal agents. "We mirrored your connection the moment Elena walked through the door. Your signal wasn't outgoing, Cole. It was a honeypot."
Cole yelled in fury, raising his gun to fire at Ethan, but Marcus was faster. A single, non-lethal shot rang out through the warehouse, striking Cole’s shoulder. The gun clattered to the floor as Cole collapsed, groaning in agony as the federal agents moved in to cuff him.
Ethan bypassed the agents entirely, rushing straight to Elena. He caught her by the shoulders, his hands trembling as he checked her for injuries. "Are you alright? Tell me you're alright."

Elena let out a long breath, her body sagging slightly with relief as she looked up into his eyes. "I'm fine, Ethan. The accounts are secure. Your company is safe."
"I don't care about the company," Ethan muttered, pulling her into a tight, desperate embrace that spoke volumes of everything he had hidden over the past weeks. Elena stiffened in surprise for a fraction of a second before wrapping her arms around his waist, burying her face into his chest.
