Chapter 9 - The Reconstruction

Three months later, the Vale Estate was no longer a cold, sterile fortress of corporate vanity. The heavy, dark drapes had been replaced with light, airy linens that let the morning sun flood the corridors. The sound of children's laughter echoed through the grand hallways as Leo chased a golden retriever puppy across the manicured lawns outside.
Ethan stood on the back terrace, a mug of coffee in his hand, watching the boy play. For the first time in his adult life, he felt a profound sense of peace. He had restructured his entire company, establishing a massive oversight committee to ensure fair wages and ethical treatment for every employee from the corporate executives down to the maintenance staff.
Elena walked out onto the terrace, wearing a comfortable white dress, a folder of financial documents tucked under her arm. She was no longer a maid; she had been officially appointed as the Chief Financial Compliance Officer for Vale Holdings, earning a salary that placed her among the top executives in the country.
"You're staring again, Ethan," she said with a playful smile, leaning against the stone railing beside him.
"I'm just admiring the view," Ethan replied softly, his eyes fixed entirely on her face. "And I don't mean the gardens."
Elena flushed slightly, looking down at her files. "The new charitable trust is completely set up. The first housing grants for single mothers and immigrant families will be distributed next month. We've ensured that every recipient has full legal protection and medical coverage integrated into the program."
"You've done an incredible job, Elena," Ethan said, placing his coffee mug down and turning to face her fully. He took the folder from her hands and set it aside, taking both of her hands in his. "But today, I don't want to talk about work. I want to talk about us."
Elena’s heart skipped a beat. Over the past three months, they had grown incredibly close, spending late nights talking about their pasts, their fears, and their dreams. Ethan had shown her a side of himself that no one else knew—a gentle, deeply caring man who had never forgotten where he came from.
"Ethan..." she whispered, her eyes searching his. "We come from such different worlds. I still have shadows following me."
"Then let me help you fight them," Ethan said, his voice thick with emotion. "I don't care about different worlds. You and Leo brought life back into this empty house. You brought me back to life. I don't want a merger, Elena. I don't want a high-society arrangement. I want you. For the rest of my life."

Elena looked out at Leo, who was waving at them from the lawn, his face bright with happiness. She looked back at Ethan, seeing the absolute sincerity and devotion in his eyes. The walls she had built around her heart for five long years finally crumbled into dust.
"Yes, Ethan," she breathed, tears of joy welling in her eyes. "I want that too."
