Chapter 7 - The Trap Springs

The victory at the docks was short-lived. While Cole Mercer was in federal custody, Vanessa Cross remained a volatile threat. Using her family’s political connections, she had managed to secure a multi-million-dollar bail within hours of her arrest, and she was unraveling publicly, determined to drag Ethan down with her.

Two days after the warehouse raid, a massive press conference was called at the Grand Plaza Hotel. Vanessa had announced she would be exposing "the true criminal operations of Vale Holdings and the illegal immigrants he harbors."

Inside the grand ballroom, hundreds of reporters, wealthy donors, and television cameras were packed wall-to-wall. The atmosphere was electric with scandal.

Ethan walked into the backstage area, his face a mask of absolute control. Beside him was Elena, dressed not in a maid's uniform or casual clothes, but in a breathtaking, tailored emerald-green silk dress that accentuated her poise and natural beauty. Leo was safe at the estate under triple security.

"Are you ready for this?" Ethan asked, looking down at her. "Vanessa is going to use every dirty trick in the book. She has the media in her pocket."

Elena adjusted the small earpiece she wore, connecting her directly to Marcus's cyber-team. "I've spent five years running from monsters far worse than Vanessa Cross, Ethan. She’s just a bully with a microphone. It’s time to take the microphone away."

As the house lights dimmed, Vanessa stepped up to the podium. She looked immaculate, though her eyes possessed a frantic, desperate glint. She began her speech, painting herself as a victim of a corporate frame-up, accusing Ethan of utilizing illegal labor and manipulating financial records to ruin her family's reputation.

"Ethan Vale is a fraud!" Vanessa shouted into the microphones, her voice echoing through the ballroom. "He uses his wealth to exploit vulnerable women, and when they help him steal, he turns them into the scapegoats! I have proof that his entire fortune is built on corrupt foundations!"

Right on cue, Ethan and Elena walked out onto the stage from the side wings. The crowd gasped, flashbulbs exploding like a firework display as reporters scrambled to get photos of the billionaire and his mysterious companion.

Vanessa laughed out loud, a sound of pure triumph, when she saw Elena. “She’s a maid, Ethan! Look at her trying to play dress-up! Who will believe her? Who will believe a servant over a Senator's daughter?”

Elena stopped a few feet from the podium, her calm demeanour a stark contrast to Vanessa’s manic energy. She glanced at the powerful donors in the front row, then at the federal agents quietly sealing every exit at the back of the room.

“You forged his signature, Vanessa,” Elena said, her voice amplified by the secondary microphone Ethan had handed her. “But you forgot one very important detail about my past... I used to audit your family’s shipping company long before I ever came to this country. I know exactly which banks you hide your money in.”
