Chapter 2 - The Hospital Bed Confession

The sirens felt like a distant dream.
When the police kicked in the door, Jason was sitting in the living room, crying.
He had already practiced his story.
"She had a manic episode," he told the officers, his voice trembling perfectly. "She fell into the glass cabinet."
But the responding officer, Officer Davis, walked past him and found me.
I was bleeding, terrified, and shaking uncontrollably.
A paramedic named Thomas gently wrapped my arms.
I didn't know Jason was standing in the hallway listening.
Officer Davis activated his body camera.
He asked me what happened.
My voice was breaking, barely above a whisper.
"He said if I leave, he’ll take the company and make everyone believe I’m unstable."
I told them everything.
The threats. The pushes. The control.
Thomas wrote every single word down in his official medical report.
But before they could take Jason out in handcuffs, he burst into the room.
He didn't look angry. He looked desperate.
He leaned over my stretcher and whispered in my ear.
"If you do this, I will leak the financial documents I altered with your signature. I will ruin your family. I will take everything."
I was heavily medicated, bleeding, and terrified of his power.
I looked at Officer Davis and retracted my statement.
I told them I made it up because I was angry.
I watched the disappointment in Thomas the paramedic's eyes as I was wheeled away.
Jason held my hand the whole ride to the hospital, playing the devoted husband.
But beneath the blanket, his fingernails were digging into my wrist.
That night, staring at the hospital ceiling, I made a promise to myself.
May you like
I wasn't going to just leave him.
I was going to destroy him.
