Chapter 7 - The House of Cards

The audio stopped playing.

The silence that followed was suffocating.

Jason’s attorney looked at his client with a mixture of shock and disgust. He hadn't known about the assault.

"Your Honor, this... this is an ambush," the attorney stammered.

"I am not finished," Daniel said coldly.

He didn't give them a second to breathe.

Daniel produced the offshore financial records and the drafted legal papers.

"Jason had quietly created a trust portraying my client as mentally incapable of managing company assets."

Daniel pointed directly at Jason.

"But look at the timestamp on those documents, Your Honor."

The judge adjusted his glasses, flipping through the pages.

"The document was drafted and dated three weeks before the emergency call," Daniel stated.

The truth was suddenly blindingly clear to everyone in the room.

He hadn’t taken my company because our marriage failed.

He hadn't been dealing with an unstable wife.

He had been building a legal story to remove me long before I ever tried to leave.

He staged the "accidents." He provoked the fights.

He drove me to the edge of a breakdown specifically to justify stealing my life's work.

"Furthermore," Daniel continued, "we have evidence that his current partner, Madison, forged medical signatures to aid in this fraudulent trust."

Madison let out a loud sob.

She turned to Jason. "You told me the lawyers said it was legal! You told me it was just standard procedure!"

"Shut up, Madison!" Jason screamed, losing his composed mask completely.

The judge slammed his gavel. "Order! One more outburst from you, sir, and you will be held in contempt."

Jason looked around the room.

He looked at his lawyer, who was packing his briefcase, refusing to defend a criminal conspiracy.

He looked at Madison, who was backing away from him, crying.

And finally, he looked at me.

I wasn't the broken, terrified woman in the hospital bed anymore.

I looked him dead in the eye and smiled.
