Chapter 5 - The Last Supper

Friday night arrived.
I wore my best designer dress, the one David always said made me look like a "proper trophy."
We pulled up to Martha’s house—a house I had essentially paid off for her.
The entire family was there.
David’s brother Kevin, his sister Sarah, and Martha, all grinning like wolves waiting for a sheep.
We sat down at the lavish dining table, eating expensive steaks and drinking vintage wine.
My wine, from my cellar, of course.
Halfway through the meal, David tapped his glass with a fork.
“Family,” he announced, standing up and placing a heavy hand on my shoulder.
“As you know, Kevin is launching his new real estate firm. And Claire and I have decided to be the primary angel investors.”
Kevin grinned, raising his glass to me. “Thanks, Claire. You won’t regret this.”
Martha chimed in, “It’s about time this family started building real generational wealth.”
Generational wealth. With my father’s money.
“Actually,” I said, standing up and gently removing David’s hand from my shoulder.
“I’ve brought the paperwork tonight.”
The room went completely silent. Eyes lit up with pure greed.
David looked at me, pleasantly surprised. “You brought the checks?”
“Better,” I said.
I reached into my designer handbag and pulled out a thick stack of pristine, legal-sized envelopes.
I walked around the table, handing one to Kevin, one to Sarah, and one to Martha.
Finally, I handed the thickest envelope to David.
“What’s this?” David asked, chuckling as he tore the seal open.
“A contract?”
“Read the first page, David,” I said, my voice dropping its sweet facade.
He pulled the papers out. His eyes scanned the heavy black text at the top.
IN THE UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT. COMPLAINT FOR CIVIL RICO, FRAUD, AND EMBEZZLEMENT.
Next to him, Martha gasped.
She was staring at a freeze order from a federal judge.
“What the hell is this?” Kevin shouted, dropping his fork.
“It’s a comprehensive list of your ghost LLCs, Kevin,” I said, walking slowly back to my seat.
“Along with the routing numbers to the Cayman accounts where you’ve been hiding my money.”
David’s face turned the color of ash.

The smug, controlling monster was suddenly trembling.
“Claire… what have you done?” he stammered.
