Chapter 6 - The Collapse

“I found the laptop, David,” I said loudly, ensuring everyone heard.
“I found the master spreadsheet. I found the distribution percentages.”
I turned to his mother. “Thirty percent, Martha? You sold your soul pretty cheap.”
Martha stood up, clutching her pearls. “You have no right! We are your family!”
“You are parasites,” I snapped, my voice finally echoing with the rage I had held back for a month.
“And you’re broke. As of 9:00 AM this morning, a federal judge froze every single bank account associated with any of you.”
Sarah pulled out her phone frantically, logging into her banking app.
“Oh my god,” she whispered, tears instantly spilling from her eyes. “It’s true. Balance is zero.”
David lunged toward me, his fists clenched. “You stupid b*tch, I’ll kill you!”
He raised his hand—the same hand he used to slap me a month ago.
Before he could take another step, the front door of the house burst open.
“Police! Nobody move!”
I hadn’t come to dinner alone.
Robert was waiting in a black SUV down the street with two federal agents and three local police officers.
Because of the interstate wire fraud and the sheer amount of money stolen, the FBI had taken a keen interest in my case.
David froze as officers swarmed the dining room.
“David Sterling, you are under arrest for felony fraud, embezzlement, and conspiracy,” an agent announced, slamming David against the dining room wall.
The sound of the handcuffs clicking shut was the most beautiful music I had ever heard.
Martha began screaming hysterically, clutching at an officer’s uniform.
“Take your hands off my son! She’s lying! She’s crazy!”

The officer calmly turned to her.
“Martha Sterling? We have a warrant for your arrest as well. Turn around, ma’am.”
