Chapter 10 - Shadows of the Past

The autumn wind rustled through the maple trees lining the quiet suburban neighborhood where Audrey had recently purchased a modest, charming home using her legitimate government salary and a clean departmental housing grant. There were no grand chandeliers, no marble fountains, and no pretentious security gates—just a warm, inviting porch, a small garden in the backyard, and a peaceful environment to raise her daughter.
Inside the cozy living room, Audrey sat at a sturdy oak desk, reviewing a routine financial compliance report for the state treasury. Her daughter, now walking steadily with the aid of a colorful push-toy, toddled across the hardwood floor and leaned against Audrey’s knee, giggling softly.
Audrey scooped the little girl up into her lap, kissing her forehead. "Are you helping mommy finish her work? You're the best assistant an auditor could ask for."
A soft knock echoed from the front door.
Audrey frowned slightly, setting her pen down. Visitors were rare, especially anyone connected to her former life. She carried her daughter to the entryway, peering through the security peephole.
Standing on her front porch was Marcus Vance’s former defense attorney, holding a sealed manila envelope.
Audrey opened the door cautiously, keeping the chain lock engaged. "Can I help you?"
"Mrs. Sterling," the attorney said politely, keeping his hands visible. "I'm not here representing Marcus or the Sterling family. I was approached by a third party who requested this document be delivered directly into your hands."
"What kind of document?" Audrey asked warily.
"It'ع an undisclosed ledger detailing a secondary offshore holding account registered under a shell corporation called Meridian Trust," the attorney explained. "Marcus Vance hid it away just before the federal raid, hoping to use it as leverage for a reduced sentence. When the prosecutors rejected his deal, he decided to pass it on to the only person smart enough to dismantle the remaining hidden assets."
Audrey stared at the manila envelope for a long moment, weighing the implications. Even after the massive asset forfeiture, there were still hidden corners of the syndicate’s financial web left untouched.

"Leave it on the porch railing," Audrey instructed calmly. "I'll review it and turn it over to federal authorities tomorrow morning."
The attorney nodded, placing the envelope down before turning and walking down the driveway without another word. Audrey closed and locked the door, a slow, determined smile spreading across her face. The past had a way of lingering, but she was no longer running from it. She was the one holding the ledger now.
