Chapter 4 - Shattered Illusions

The heavy oak doors of the grand ballroom swung open with a resounding crash, cutting through the soaring notes of the string quartet and the polite chatter of elite guests. Instead of the expected late-night dessert course, more than a dozen armed federal agents in tactical gear poured into the room, their weapons lowered but their body language radiating absolute, unyielding authority.

A collective gasp echoed across the dance floor. Women clutched their pearls, and prominent politicians instinctively stepped backward, dropping their half-empty champagne flutes onto silver trays.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Eleanor Sterling shrieked, marching toward the lead federal agent with her chin held high, her diamond rings flashing beneath the crystal chandelier. "Do you have any idea who my family is? My husband is Arthur Sterling, a personal advisor to the governor! Get these thugs out of my son's wedding immediately!"

Arthur Sterling pushed through the crowd beside his wife, his face flushed with righteous fury as he pointed a trembling finger at the agent in charge. "This is an outrage! I'll have every single one of your badges by morning. Security, remove these intruders!"

The estate security guards never appeared. They were currently handcuffed in the back of a state police van parked outside.

Special Agent Thomas Vance—no relation to Marcus—stepped forward, unrolling a heavy parchment document with official federal seals.

"Arthur Sterling, Eleanor Sterling, and Julian Sterling," Agent Vance read aloud, his deep voice carrying clearly across the silent ballroom. "You are hereby placed under federal arrest for wire fraud, money laundering, conspiracy, and the systematic theft of over forty-two million dollars in municipal development funds."

The color drained from Arthur’s face, his haughty expression instantly collapsing into sheer terror. "There... there's been a mistake. We are legitimate businessmen—"

"The only mistake you made was thinking your wealth placed you above the law," Agent Vance interrupted coldly, nodding to his team. "Take them into custody."

Before Arthur or Eleanor could utter another protest, federal agents moved in, placing cold steel handcuffs around their wrists and guiding them down the center aisle where they had walked in triumph only hours before. The elite guests parted frantically, whispering among themselves in absolute shock as cameras flashed—not from the wedding videographer, but from reporters who had received the media advisory minutes prior.

Julian stood frozen near the edge of the bar, his hands trembling as two agents approached him. He looked around the ballroom, searching desperately for his sister Seraphina, who was currently sobbing hysterically against her new husband's chest, her designer wedding gown dragging through spilled champagne.

"Julian Sterling," an agent said firmly, grabbing his arm and forcing his hands behind his back. "You have the right to remain silent..."

"Wait! You don't understand!" Julian panicked, his voice cracking as the cold metal cuffs clamped down on his wrists. "My wife... my wife is in the service wing! She's having a baby! You can't just—"

"Your wife is currently being attended by federal paramedics," the agent cut him off sharply, shoving him forward toward the exit. "And she was the one who signed your arrest warrant."

Julian stopped dead in his tracks, his eyes wide with utter incomprehension as the words echoed in his ears. "What... what did you say?"

"You locked a forensic auditor inside a broom closet, Julian," the agent whispered grimly, pushing him toward the doors. "And she spent the last nine months building the exact case file that is going to put you away for the rest of your life."
