Chapter 6 - Interrogation Room B

The fluorescent lights of the federal holding facility hummed with a sterile, soul-crushing persistence. Inside Interrogation Room B, Julian Sterling sat hunched over a stainless-steel table, his bespoke tuxedo wrinkled and stained with spilled champagne, his wrists still locked to the bolted metal ring in the center of the tabletop. The arrogant, untouchable heir of Sterling Ridge Estate was entirely gone, replaced by a desperate, hollowed-out man whose eyes darted nervously toward the heavy one-way mirror.
The heavy steel door swung open with a loud metallic click.
Special Agent Diana Cruz walked in, carrying a thick manila folder stamped with red confidential markings. She tossed the folder onto the table with a sharp slap that made Julian flinch, taking a seat directly across from him.
"Where is my wife?" Julian demanded, his voice cracking with a desperate edge. "Where is my daughter? You have no right to keep me from my family!"
"Your wife is currently recovering at a secure medical facility, resting comfortably with her healthy newborn daughter," Diana replied coolly, opening the folder to reveal page after page of meticulously highlighted financial transactions. "As for your family—your mother and father are currently in adjacent holding cells across the hall. They're already blaming each other for the embezzlement conspiracy."
Julian swallowed hard, licking his dry lips as he stared at the financial records. "I didn't know the full extent of it... my father handled the corporate structuring. I just signed where I was told to sign. It was standard family business procedure."
Diana leaned forward, resting her forearms on the table as her sharp eyes locked onto his. "Let's stop playing games, Julian. We have your digital signatures stamped on twenty-four shell company transfers originating from municipal infrastructure accounts. We have the encrypted email chain between you and Marcus Vance discussing how to skim two million dollars from the highway expansion fund to pay for Seraphina's wedding."
Julian slumped back in his chair, the weight of the undeniable evidence crushing his remaining defenses. "We needed liquidity... the real estate market in the northern district crashed last quarter, and our debt-to-equity ratio was through the roof. If the board found out, the entire family name would have been ruined."
"So you decided to steal from taxpayers and launder the money through fake construction bids," Diana stated flatly, jotting down a quick note on a legal pad. "And when your wife—who happened to be the senior forensic investigator assigned to this exact case—went into premature labor because of your negligence, you locked her in a restroom so she wouldn't interrupt your sister's first dance."
Julian flushed crimson, staring down at his cuffed hands in miserable silence. "I panicked. Seraphina had been planning that wedding for two years. If Audrey had caused a scene, everyone would have known..."
"Known what? That your family's entire lifestyle was built on fraud and theft?" Diana interrupted, her voice dripping with quiet contempt. "Your sister's wedding wasn't a fairy tale, Julian. It was a criminal enterprise celebration funded by stolen public money. And your wife wasn't just some helpless accountant you could brush aside. She's the one who built the entire case file that put the handcuffs on your wrists."
The door behind Diana opened slightly, and a federal prosecutor slipped a folded white document onto the table before exiting silently. Diana glanced at the paper, a faint, sardonic smile touching the corner of her lips.
"What is that?" Julian whispered, his voice trembling.

"That is your plea agreement offer," Diana said, sliding the document across the stainless-steel table. "Twenty-five years federal minimum without parole, unless you cooperate fully and testify against your father and Marcus Vance regarding the primary offshore accounts in the Caymans."
Julian stared at the paper as if it were a venomous snake, the reality of his choices finally setting in with terrifying permanence.
