Chapter 5 - The First Cry

Inside the east bridal restroom, the marble floor felt like ice beneath Audrey’s back, but the sharp focus of the medical team kept her anchored to reality. The bright overhead vanity lights illuminated the cramped space, transforming it into a sterile operating theater fueled by adrenaline and raw survival instinct.
"Push, Audrey, take a deep breath and push," Combat Medic Sergeant Sarah Miller instructed calmly, wiping sweat from Audrey’s forehead with a sterile towel. "The head is crowning. You're doing incredible."
Audrey gripped the edges of the porcelain sink, her knuckles turning bone-white as she exerted every ounce of remaining strength into the contraction. The distant sound of shouting from the grand ballroom filtered through the walls, followed by the heavy thud of footsteps and the clanking of handcuffs, but none of it mattered anymore. Her entire world narrowed down to the rhythmic breathing instructions and the burning pain in her core.
"One more big push, Audrey!" Sarah encouraged, her hands steady and professional.
Audrey screamed, arching her back as a sudden, intense wave of relief washed over her, instantly replacing the agonizing pain with a profound, breathless weightlessness. A split second later, a sharp, piercing cry echoed off the tile walls—small, fragile, yet filled with vibrant life.
"It's a girl," Sarah smiled warmly, lifting the crying infant wrapped in a sterile thermal blanket and placing her gently onto Audrey’s chest. "She's healthy, breathing on her own, and she has your eyes."
Tears streamed freely down Audrey’s face as she cradled her tiny daughter close, burying her face in the baby's soft, damp hair. "Hi there," she whispered, her voice choking with emotion. "You made it. We both made it."
Diana Cruz stepped into the restroom, her tactical helmet removed, revealing a wide, genuine smile as she looked down at the newborn. "Talk about an entrance. She wanted to make sure she arrived while her father's empire was actively collapsing."
Audrey looked up at Diana, a tired yet victorious smile touching her lips. "Is it done? Are they all secured?"
"Every single one of them," Diana confirmed, pulling a slim electronic tablet from her tactical vest. "Arthur, Eleanor, Marcus, and Julian are currently sitting in the back of separate transport vehicles. They tried to claim diplomatic immunity through some absurd municipal loophole, but our federal prosecutors shut it down in three minutes."

Audrey gently stroked her daughter's tiny cheek, feeling a profound sense of closure settle over her spirit. The months of late-night document analysis, the hidden financial trails, the endless microaggressions from the Sterling family, and the terrifying moments locked inside the dark restroom—it had all led to this exact moment of absolute justice.
"Good," Audrey murmured softly. "Because I have a complete financial audit report waiting on my desk at the bureau, and I think it's time to sign off on the final chapter."
