Chapter 12 - The Unbroken Smile

Three months after the trial, I stood on the private balcony of my penthouse apartment, looking down at the glittering lights of the metropolis below. The air was cool against my face, and when I ran my tongue lightly over my teeth, the smooth porcelain bridge felt completely natural.

My phone buzzed on the patio table beside me. It was an automated bank notification confirming the final clearance of the escrow accounts from the liquidation of Daniel’s former estate.

I picked up the phone, scrolled past my contacts, and permanently deleted the old numbers that no longer belonged in my life. There was no room for ghosts of the past when the future was this brilliantly bright.

A knock sounded at the penthouse door, and when I opened it, Marcus stood there holding a bottle of vintage champagne and two crystal flutes.

“To new beginnings, sole proprietorship, and absolute freedom,” Marcus toasted, pouring the sparkling wine into the glasses.

I clinked my glass against his, the crystal ringing out clear and true through the quiet apartment.

“To never letting anyone tell you who you are,” I replied, taking a sip and looking out at the endless horizon.

The nightmare in the kitchen was a distant memory, replaced by the unshakeable truth that I was the author, the architect, and the undisputed master of my own destiny.
