Chapter 9 - The Fallout in the Courtroom

The family court hearing was scheduled for nine o'clock on a crisp Tuesday morning, and the atmosphere in the hallway outside Judge Sterling's chambers was thick with palpable tension. Daniel sat on a metal bench with his head in his hands, his posture slumped and defeated, while Margaret paced back and forth, muttering furious retorts under her breath.
When the double oak doors opened, Marcus stepped out and motioned for me to enter first. I walked through the doorway with measured steps, wearing a tailored navy suit that commanded the room.
Judge Sterling adjusted his glasses and looked down at the thick stack of financial briefs resting on his desk. “Mr. Vance, your firm has presented an overwhelming body of evidence regarding corporate embezzlement, asset obfuscation, and domestic abuse. Do you have any final remarks before I rule on the permanent asset forfeiture and divorce decree?”
Marcus stepped forward respectfully. “Only that my client, Natalie Vance, seeks no alimony, no shared property division, and no further contact. She asks only for the immediate and permanent dissolution of the marriage, alongside the enforcement of the prenuptial forfeiture clauses.”
Daniel burst through the side doors, his face flushed with anger and desperation. “Your Honor, she trapped us! She engineered this whole thing from the shadows! That company belongs to my family!”
Judge Sterling raised a single hand, silencing Daniel instantly with a stern, icy glare. “Mr. Sterling, the corporate registry records clearly show that Miss Vance has been the sole financial guarantor and controlling shareholder of Sterling Logistics for over three years. You were an employee operating at her discretion.”
Margaret rushed into the room behind her son, her hands trembling as she pointed a manicured finger at me. “She’s a calculating monster! She let us believe we were in charge just to destroy us at the end!”

“Sit down, Mrs. Sterling, or you will be held in contempt of court,” the bailiff warned, stepping between them.
Judge Sterling picked up his heavy wooden gavel and brought it down with a sharp, echoing crack that sealed their fate. “The divorce is granted on the grounds of severe emotional and physical abuse, alongside proven financial fraud. All remaining assets are awarded entirely to the petitioner, Natalie Vance. Court is adjourned.”
