Chapter 8 - The Empty House and the New Horizon

By late afternoon, the moving trucks had pulled away, leaving the sprawling four-bedroom house completely silent. The expensive art pieces that Margaret had insisted on hanging were gone, replaced by bare white walls that smelled faintly of lemon cleaner and fresh paint.

I walked through every room, sliding my fingers along the window sills that I had spent years scrubbing while being told I wasn't doing enough.

There were no more echoes of harsh laughter from the kitchen island. No more late-night financial spreadsheets hidden under my pillow. No more terror at the sound of heavy footsteps on the stairs.

My phone chimed softly on the kitchen counter. It was a message from Marcus.

“Corporate audit complete. Sterling Logistics has been successfully liquidated. Remaining assets transferred to Vance Holdings. You are officially the sole majority shareholder.”

I walked out onto the back patio, breathing in the crisp evening air as the sun began to dip below the horizon. The bruise on my cheek had faded to a faint yellow, and my smile—once broken and hidden behind my hand—felt entirely whole again.

For the first time in five years, the house belonged to me, the money belonged to me, and my life belonged to me.

I pulled out my phone, opened the encrypted note where I had once typed my three-step plan, and deleted it with a single tap.
