Chapter 13 - The Courtroom Reckoning

The federal courtroom was packed to capacity, the polished oak benches filled with reporters, legal observers, and curious onlookers drawn by the sensational exposure of the Vance family empire. Judge Harrison sat high above the room on the mahogany bench, his expression stern and unreadable as he reviewed the final sentencing memorandums submitted by the prosecution.
Evan Vance and Jeffrey Vance stood side by side at the defense table, both dressed in orange jumpsuits, their wrists shackled together. They refused to look at each other, the resentment between the brothers now palpable enough to cut with a knife. Seated in the second row behind her sons was Eleanor Vance, her once-impeccable composure completely shattered, her eyes hollow and fixed on the polished wooden floor.
“State v. Vance, et al.,” the bailiff announced loudly, the heavy gavel echoing through the chamber. “For conspiracy, medical battery, wire fraud, identity theft, and grand larceny.”
Judge Harrison looked down from the bench, his gaze sweeping slowly across the defense table before resting squarely on Evan and Jeffrey.
“Mr. Evan Vance,” the judge began, his deep, resonant voice filling the silent courtroom. “The court has reviewed the totality of the evidence, including the digital records, financial wire trails, and corroborated testimonies from medical professionals. You orchestrated a calculated, predatory campaign of psychological torture and bodily violation against your own wife, utilizing fraudulent medical procedures to deceive and manipulate her for your own personal and familial preservation. Actions of this magnitude strike at the very heart of human dignity and the rule of law.”
Evan swallowed hard, staring straight ahead without uttering a single word of defense.
“For the charges of felony medical battery, wire fraud, and identity theft,” Judge Harrison continued without hesitation, “this court sentences you to twenty-two years in federal prison without the possibility of parole for the first ten years. Mr. Jeffrey Vance, for your active participation and conspiracy in the unauthorized genetic transfer, you are sentenced to twelve years in federal prison.”
A collective gasp rippled through the courtroom gallery. Jeffrey buried his face in his cuffed hands and began to weep openly, while Evan closed his eyes, his body trembling as the full weight of his decades-long prison sentence crashed down upon him.
Judge Harrison then turned his gaze toward the second row, where Eleanor Vance sat paralyzed by shock.

“Furthermore, the Vance Family Trust is hereby dissolved and liquidated under federal asset forfeiture laws, with all remaining liquid assets redirected toward victims of corporate medical fraud and public healthcare advocacy programs. Court is adjourned.”
The heavy gavel struck the wooden block with a sharp, final crack that signaled the definitive end of the Vance empire’s reign of deceit.
