Chapter 9 - Interrogation Under the Fluorescent Lights

The interrogation room was a claustrophobic box of gray cinderblock and scarred metal, lit by a single humming overhead fixture that cast long, stark shadows across the table. Through the one-way mirror, Carrie and I watched in absolute silence as Detective Miller and a junior officer sat down opposite Evan and Jeff. Evan looked entirely different from the charming, confident man who had hosted our family gathering just days ago. His shoulders were slumped, his expensive shirt was wrinkled, and his hair was unkempt. Jeff sat beside him, nervously tapping his fingers against the metal table, staring intently at the floor as if hoping the concrete would swallow him whole.
“Let’s go over the timeline one more time, Mr. Vance,” Detective Miller said, leaning forward and opening a thick manila folder. “According to the fertility clinic records, on the morning of October 14th, your wife underwent a minor outpatient procedure for an ovarian cyst at the Saint Jude Medical Center. During that procedure, while she was under general anesthesia, you and your brother, acting in direct conspiracy with the attending physician—Dr. Robert Hayes—authorized an unscheduled frozen embryo transfer utilizing Jeff’s genetic material. Is that a correct summary of the events?”
Evan didn't answer immediately. He stared at his hands resting on the metal table, his jaw clenched so tightly the muscles stood out in stark relief.
“It was a closed system,” Evan muttered finally, his voice raspy and devoid of its usual arrogance. “We used an independent clinic that our family foundation partially funded. Dr. Hayes was a family friend. He agreed to process the paperwork as an expedited internal transfer because Evan was desperate to save his marriage.”
“To save his marriage by committing felony medical battery and identity theft,” Detective Miller corrected sharply, slamming his pen onto the table. “You didn't save anything, Mr. Vance. You engineered a grotesque violation of a human being’s fundamental right to bodily autonomy. And Dr. Hayes’s medical license is about to be permanently revoked, along with a multi-count federal indictment for medical fraud.”
Across the table, Jeff flinched violently at the mention of the federal indictment. He buried his face in his cuffed hands and began to sob, his shoulders shaking with genuine terror.
“I told him it was a bad idea!” Jeff choked out, his voice cracking with panic as he turned to glare at his older brother. “I told you from day one, Evan, that forging her signature on those consent forms would eventually catch up with us! But you said everything was locked down, that the family trust would protect us from any fallout!”
“Shut up, Jeff!” Evan snapped, slamming his fist against the table and glaring daggers at his younger brother. “You agreed to it! You were a willing participant from the very beginning!”
“Only because you threatened to cut me out of the family trust and blackmailed me with my old college debt!” Jeff roared back, standing up so fast his metal chair screeched loudly against the floor. “I never wanted any part of your sick obsession, Evan! You wanted a child to secure your inheritance, and you used me as a biological tool without caring about what it would do to Marina or me!”
Through the one-way observation glass, I watched the brothers tear each other apart with a cold, detached fascination. The illusion of their unbreakable family unity had vanished in an instant, dissolved by the harsh reality of criminal accountability and self-preservation.
“That’s enough!” Detective Miller commanded, standing up and motioning for two uniformed officers outside the door to step in and separate the bickering brothers. “Take Mr. Jeffrey Vance down to holding cell B. Keep Mr. Evan Vance here; we have additional charges to discuss regarding witness intimidation and financial extortion.”
As the officers hauled Jeff out of the room, kicking and shouting justifications, Evan slumped back into his chair, staring blankly at the metal table. He looked up slowly toward the one-way mirror, his bloodshot eyes locking directly onto my reflection hidden behind the glass, as if he could feel my presence watching his total destruction.
Carrie shivered beside me, pulling her jacket tighter around her shoulders.

“It’s really over for them,” she whispered, her voice barely audible.
“No,” I replied, turning away from the glass with a cold, steely resolve in my eyes. “It’s only just beginning. Because Eleanor and the family trust are still out there, and I’m going to make sure every single person involved in this conspiracy pays for what they did.”
