Chapter 6 - The Shattered Phone and the Ultimatum

The crunch of the shattered phone screen under Evan’s shoe felt like the final nail in the coffin of my former life. I didn't flinch. I didn't scream. A cold, heavy resolve settled deep into my chest, replacing the grief and confusion with something much sharper, much more dangerous. Jeff stepped back nervously, clearly realizing that Evan had crossed a line from which there was no turning back, while Carrie buried her face in her hands and sobbed openly.

“You think destroying my phone stops the truth?” I asked, my voice dangerously calm as I looked straight into my husband’s bloodshot eyes. “The clinic has physical records, Evan. They have security footage, signed consent forms with forged signatures, and billing trails linking directly to your corporate accounts. Do you really think a judge is going to protect you once I walk through the doors of the district attorney’s office?”

Evan’s jaw tightened, a muscle ticking violently in his cheek as he realized the fatal flaw in his intimidation tactic.

“You don’t have those files, Marina,” Evan hissed, taking a threatening step forward. “The physical binder is locked in my office safe back home. Without it, it’s just your word against ours.”

“She doesn't need the physical binder,” a quiet, trembling voice interrupted from the corner.

We all turned to look at Carrie. She was staring down at her own tablet resting on the desk, her fingers flying across the glass screen with frantic speed.

“What are you talking about, Carrie?” Evan snapped, turning his hostility toward her.

“When you blackmailed me into keeping your secret six months ago,” Carrie said, her voice steadying as she looked up with a cold, unforgiving glare, “you made one fatal mistake, Evan. You didn't trust me enough to let me hold just your word. I digitized every single document, every billing receipt, and every recorded phone call between you and Jeff regarding the clinic procedure. They’re backed up on an encrypted cloud server that requires my biometric authorization to access.”

Evan lunged toward the desk like a starving animal, his hands outstretched to grab the tablet, but Jeff caught him by the shoulder, hauling him backward before he could assault my sister in broad daylight.

“Are you out of your mind, Evan?!” Jeff yelled, shoving his brother against the wall. “Hitting her in front of forty people wasn't enough? You want to add physical assault to felony medical fraud?”

“Let me go, Jeff!” Evan thrashed against his brother’s grip, his face purple with rage. “She’s going to ruin us! Our parents, our company, everything we’ve built—it’ll all be gone because of her stubbornness!”

“Your company and your family were built on a foundation of lies and criminal violation,” I said, stepping past them toward the front door, which now hung off its splintered hinges. “You did this to yourselves.”

“Marina, wait!” Carrie cried out, standing up quickly and grabbing a heavy leather jacket from the coat rack. “I’m coming with you. I’m not staying here with him another second.”

Evan pushed Jeff away with a violent shove, but before he could intercept us, Carrie tapped a final button on her tablet. A sharp, automated alarm tone chimed from the device, followed by an automated voice announcing: “Encrypted evidence package successfully transmitted to local law enforcement cyber crimes division and district attorney intake portal.”

Evan froze mid-stride, his arms dropping to his sides as the color drained completely from his face. The fight evaporated from his body in an instant, leaving him looking small, defeated, and utterly ruined. Without looking back, Carrie and I stepped out through the broken doorway, leaving the two brothers standing in the wreckage of their own deceit.
